Face Rake Takedown Setup
Wed Oct 18, 2006 5:54 am
This is a simple, yet effective way to setup your takedowns. Demonstrated by Lockflow.com members Mario Miranda and Brian Shaw.
Step 1
Brian starts by grabbing Mario's wrist. This helps to direct Mario's attention away from the other setup as well as preparation for the takedown itself. | Step 2
Brian starts to face rake by lightly placing his fingers on Mario's forehead. |
Step 3
Brian continues to drag his fingers lower across Mario's face. This makes Mario's eyes temporarily close. | Step 4
Follow the rake until your hand has completely cleared your opponents face. |
Step 5
Use the hand that was gripping your opponent's and push their hand out to the side and then follow through with whatever takedown you want to then follow up with. |

He's not going for the eyes - he is just sliding down the face. The eyes close as a reaction. I don't think that it is that dirty...but that might just be me!![]()

Most people will instinctively close their eyes for the FEAR that something might happen. You don't actually poke or touch their eyes really. You just let your fingers brush against it and out of instinct.![]()

*They close their eyes!![]()

It's only dirty if you follow up this with a groin kick instead of a takedown..... ;-)![]()

This technique isn't dirty. It is being taught to wrestling teams all around the world as you read this. It is a basic way to set up the take down. Sometimes you do not even have to "rake" the eyes. I think that word is what is causing the confusion. You can just put your hand in their face or touch their forehead. As long as the guy blinks, you have a moment to shoot!![]()
Enigmachrysalis
It's pretty risky. I really don't want to put my fingers near anybody's eyes unless it's in a closed fist.![]()

Wn if you can lose if you must, but cheat at all times.Er um win at any cost.Um I mean...lol![]()
toughmanchamp
I dont see anything dirty about it. If you can rake and push your opponents face back while clinching, I dont see the difference. What if it was called a "Face Wipe" instead of "Face Rake", wouldnt sound so "dirty"![]()
Spaz
i used this in wrestling in high school, since you cant hit them, you can still put your hands up to their eyes, or even push the forehead deos the same thing. Now i use it in pankration tournaments.![]()

This is one of the few steups that, in my opinion, benefeits from a light touch. Many fighters and grapplers are used to hard forces against their body and head, however a light touch sliding down their face can cause them to take a mental step back and go "What the heck?" It can freeze them for the split second that you need to shoot in and take them where you want to.![]()
scaryjello
it is dirty, I LIKE IT..LOL![]()
submission brawler
Seems pretty dirty. I wouldn't want to mess up and get them in the eyes.![]()
CanadianRush
this is the setup for old school wrestling, we did it all the time. It isn't dirty, if your a wrestler you know whats coming next. Someone rakes my face and my legs shoot back and my forarms start looking for shoulders. (only in a fight ;-) )![]()
FireCat-75
great tech. man can't see he can't fight. Karate Kid rule 1. Not dirty at all. ![]()

you have to be quick with your shoot...right when your fingers are over his eyes you should already be reaching for his legs![]()
martial_warrior
if you poke the eyes it is dirty, but if you just make them think you are it is fair.![]()

this setup is old. my dad taught me this when i was 5. i personally like to "poke" the forehead a bit above the bridge of the nose. same result but is a bit quicker.![]()

I'm not sure if there are any folkstyle wrestlers here, but they made this illegal recently. Now, you can only place the fingers on the forehead (using the palm to block vision) but not 'rake' downwards.![]()
Assassin Al
In any case, this still is a good set-up.
