I've always found buddy strapping to be more painful than just taping a single toe. So I tape up the one toe well and then put a length of tape around the foot where the toes attach to the foot. Makes it more comfy and feels nice and secure, plus it's less likely to come off when sweaty.
Broken toes and fingers are an occupational hazard I'm afraid, so after a while you'll become an expert in dealing with them.
Make sure you see a doc if the toe turns pale and cold or if it becomes really swollen and red. You can treat them yourself, but if you are concerned because they look weird or they are causing you issues for too long, then make sure you follow up with a doctor's visit. Same rule of thumb for a bunch of minor injuries.
