This is one of my favorite drills for developing the hands and reaction to attacks for the hands.
My partner here is Sally who was featured on MSNBC's "Warrior Nation" mini-series on MMA. Many people who saw the documentary, have asked me what Sally and I were doing when she was warming up for the fights and commented the Sally looked very sharp - so I thought that I would share the drill with Lockflow. (btw, Sally Ko'ed her opponent at the opening of the 2nd rd)
I used you tube to explain the drill, but also added a bit of a tutorial below.

This drill is hard to explain within 20 pictures, but my partner will start by throwing a jab
Next, Sally follows up with a right hand, basically the goal of the dril is for for Sally to react with certain techniques after I give her a "Trigger". Whenever Sally finishes the reaction, she is to go back to the Jab, Right Hand or what we call the "1, 2".. The leader or Mitt holder, will then throw random techniques at the striker...
If I throw a right hook at Sally's head she will roll under my swing (to her left) and follow with a ....
Left Hook, Straight Right... then she goes back into the Ryhthm of 1,2
If I throw a Left hook at Sally's head, she rolls under my punch (to her right) and follows up with a...
straight right, left hook...she then returns to the 1,2 ryhthm
Another "Trigger" I might throw is the Double Up, with the double up, I first hit low, which Sally blocks with a body block...
and then I swing the same hand up high, which Sally rolls under
Then Sally follows up with the same combo as the left hook trigger - a straight right, left hook, then she goes back into the the 1,2 rhythm
I might also feed the "Trigger" of right low to right high hooks, with Sally body blocks and rolls under - then follows up with a...
Left Hook, Straight Right... then she goes back into the Ryhthm of 1,2
Another "Trigger" I can throw is the straight left, which Sally slips to the outside and follows up with a...
Right uppercut, then....
Left Hook, Straight Right... then she goes back into the Ryhthm of 1,2
I might also throw a Straight right, again Sally reacts by slipping to the outside of, and follows up with a....
left uppercut, then.....
straight right, left hook...she then returns to the 1,2 ryhthm

Wow, there are so many neat things about this drill. Not only the athleticism and coordination, but holy good job CombatChaz in assembling all the steps and video for this. 5 stars!!

Courage does not always roar. Sometimes courage is the quiet voice at the end of the day saying "I will try again tomorrow"

Wow, Sally has great hands! She has really good hip movement when striking. I can't wait to try and incorporate this into my striking workout.
Trample the weak, hurdle the dead.
Nice job Chaz and Sally, good workout drill. I will definently have to try it some time.
it looks like a great drill to get yourself relaxed and keep loose, i dont think i am cordinated enough to pull it off!! lol
I wish I was going to your school man!
Great Drill!!!!
Pro MMA and combat arts.
Chaz, would you recommend that you mix the duck/roll w/ a cover technique (glove on ear style), but respond w/ the same hook/straight or straight/hook combo.
Also, for the straight punch counters, would you recommend a parry as a substitute for the slip?
Additionally, what is the rationale to countering the straight punches w/ a uppercut first? (I am just wondering if this is for practice or if a hook would be more applicable since your body is already loaded after the slip.)
Lastly, a jab-straight combo follows each trigger-counter sequence, right?
Anyway, awesome drill! This is the way to ingrain counter response into muscle memory to react w/out thinking. Nice!

This is without a doubt one of the best drills out there. I work all those things with my guys but more of a combonation than a drill....like 1,2, sway, 3.....this is perfect I will strictly enforce this in my class as a drill. Thanks

Enigmachrysalis. you have mail.
Chaz, this is awesome. I started doing this with my guys last night and they loved it! I used to do the same as rpatrizzi and do this more like a combo drill, but this is fantastic!
I'll see if I can get video posted after the weekend!
Nice, looking forward to it... we can even have fun competitions!
I'm so stealing this one from you...I'll give you proper props though!
Wow, great drill...gotta try it soon.
The biggest room in the world is the room for improvement...
i really like this drill...looks like it's going to take a lot of work, but the payoff should be good!
I've implemented this drill into my stand-up class..I love it, but I was surprised how many people can't keep rhythm with their feet or the feeders keeping the rhythm on the pads...weird.
Thunder, like you, I found out the holding pads is an entirely different art form from hitting them. We have had many classes on how to hold.
I love this drill. I will put some footage of it in use. Thanks for the drill video.
Wow, this looks awesome. I don't think I'd have the coordination for either role, holding or hitting, but I definitely wanna try it.
Question: I'm not much of a stand up fighter, I'm really just starting to get into it, so I work just basic drills, mostly with 1-2's and 1-2-hooks. Most of the drills I do, though, I extend my punches (obviously not all the way so as not to risk damage to the elbow). In the video though it looks like Sally isn't extending much. I don't mean to criticize, I just want to know for the sake of understanding the drill. Is there a reason for this, like it helps keep rhythm or something, or is she actually extending and my untrained eye is just not catching it? I can't keep up with her hands =P
"I don't care if it's God's own Anti-Son-of-a-B*tch machine or a giant hula hoop, we are not going to let them have it. What we will let them have is a belly full of lead, and a pool of their own blood to drown in!" - Sergeant Johnson
For the drill, we go about 1/2 way out
Hey Chaz, just letting you know that I end almost every class with this drill. I've been calling it "stompin bugs". I've thrown in kicks so they can shield and cut kick and then keep the rhythm, or I'll yell "sprawl" and they have to sprawl and come up with a knee....so many variables. Of course I've given proper kudos to you. They're all dead after 2 rounds of 5 minutes.
Nice, glad it works for ya - thunder - post a vid if you have time!
That's great, I'm gonna have to try this with my friend tonight. Definitely gonna screw up a bunch though
wow coach i miss that gym.alot of great times black eyes bloody noses hard work.good memorys.i learned alot there.
that drill is no joke
great job and nasty hands
Here's the first portion of a series we do based on the same idea:
In this variation I'm calling for specific combinations, such as 1-2-3, 2-3-2, 6-3, etc. Joels "cue" is my attack, to which he will respond with specific counters, as follows:
Vs. my right overhand/hook/straight - he rsponds with 6-3-2.
Vs. my left hook - he responds with 3-2
Vs. my low right hook - he responds with 5-2-3 or 3-2-3
Vs. my liver shot - he responds with 6-3-2
We play the drill loose, and with power, as the idea is to ingrain the reactions into him as he would actually be using them.
In part 2 we begin to add counters to kicks.
Lucky is the man who never has to confront what he is truly capable of.
good stuff Adrian!
