Sambo Reverse Leg Control Drill

this drill is probably the most important drill we do at remix dojo. it is an essential body mechanic that you must understand to aggressively seek leg control. it is very similar to a common armbar drill, from guard were you swing from one arm to the other and extend your hips. its the same idea, and it is meant to build speed, core strength and more importantly confidence in the position of reverse leg control.

a lot of people who are good at leg locks are more comfortable with the standard 'ankle lock' position of leg control. this 'knee bar' type of leg control is not usually as comfortable for most people and is often abandoned too quickly. this drill helps people get comfortable committing to the position before they learn the submissions from this position (ie. knee bars, calf crushes, and most importantly... toe holds.)

  • the footing
  • start with your partner standing tall in front of you. place one foot on their thigh and hook the other foot behind their knee.
  • underhook
  • while staying on your back, reach out and underhook the leg on the same side that you have the foot hooked in.
  • the spin
  • push off of their thigh with your foot and spin on your back COMPLETELY 180 degrees. your head should now be next to their foot. it is important to get all the way around so that your butt is facing the same direction as their knee.
  • the heist
  • lift your hips into the air. your crotch should go past their knee. use both hands to squeeze their shin to your chest. squeeze your knees together once you get fully extended.
  • turn back start over
  • turn back to the center and switch your feet and repeat the drill on the other side.

Courage does not always roar. Sometimes courage is the quiet voice at the end of the day saying "I will try again tomorrow"
