Anyone roll with diabetes?
My Christmas gift this year I guess is diabetes. Started getting ridiculously thirsty, literally drinking 300 ounces of water a day. Went into the doctors office, a nurse stuck my finger and left. Another nurse came and stuck my finger and left. The doc then stuck my finger again, then they took blood. The doc came back in and asks how I'm feeling, I said fine. He asked if I was sure, I say yes. I told him I had rolled for 2 hours the night before so yeah, I feel fine. My blood sugar was 589, at the time I had no idea how bad that was. When I googled it I read that I should pretty much be dead or in a coma. The 1st article I read said "this is an emergency, call 911."
Doc set me up an appt with a specialist and told me he would not be surprized if I was going to go straight on insulin. Pretty much ate nothing but water, green beans. fish and lettuce for the next week. Got to the specialist and my blood sugar was down to 110, which is great. He feels like I will not need insulin at this point since it came down so fast. I'm on a couple meds and have another appt next month. (funny side effect - because I lowered my blood sugar so fast my eyes have gone all blurry, specialist said it would take about a month to get everything back to normal. For a couple days there I couldn't see much. Scared the crap out of me!)
So I've changed a lot of what I eat, never was a junk food guy but I did eat a ton of rice, bread...Gotta knock a ton of that out. Test myself twice a day and take my meds.
Just wondering if anyone else had it or rolls with anyone that does. Some tips maybe? Things to watch out for? Haven't really rolled in a couple of weeks. Probably get going again after the 1st of the year.
Yea, sounds like you were possibly getting close to being in DKA. I would assume if they felt that was the case though then they would have admitted you.
I will also clarify, short term high sugar is not as serious as low sugar, if you were to be high for a long time, day's to weeks or beyond, you can certainly run into trouble. My son was likley high for a week or more before. People are often high for a while before they are diagnosed because they are dehydrated and will unknowingly treat with things like pedialite which will only compound the issues.
Have they asked you to check for ketones? That is the check used to determine the potential for DKA...
Start taking chia seeds sir, chia seeds slow the use of sugars so that they dont spike your system and carbs. Also start taking cinnamon too it help your body with sugars. But please im PLEASE TAKE THE CHIA SEEDS, i have seen them work instantly on a guy that worked for me that was almost dying all the time no joke. He was normal and his doctors wanted to know what he had been doing cause he wasnt having problems anymore and didnt need the insulin as much.
Try taking them with lunch too, taking it with your lunch will even you out more and you will eat less cause the chia expands. Im glad its helping you, also take cinnimon pills instead of just with breakfast, The pills will help out alot more than just whats in your oatmeal
my son is a type one diabetic for the last six years. He just turned nine. He plays all the usual sports but as was mentioned earlier, has to check sugar glucose more often when exercising. It is a balancing act for sure. a1c of 14 is high indeed, also type 1 is a bigger deal than type two. Ya just do the best you can. We're starting a judo program together in a few weeks, and I hope he falls in love with martial arts like his dad. Exercise is another great way of controlling sugars. Best wishes to the father of the two year old and your family.

Hey bruce, I dont know about rolling with diabetes but my son was diagnosed about two months ago with type 1 (he's two so we are just working the basics of jiu jitsu now
). 589 is not dangerous per say, the pit falls of that are dehydration, and something called diabetic ketoacidosis. Low blood sugar is when you risk coma and the like.
My son had the same clues, thirst also weight loss and lethergy. I know Jay Cutler is a type 1 diabetic and he says he just has to go check to ensure he doesnt go low on the field but in reality not too much changes.
I happy you caught it and know that now adays it can be managed fairly well, in comparison to "back in the day".
Be carefull and take care of your lows, I know instantly when my son is low, he gets shakey and can't even really stand up. I believe his vision is affected as well because it seems he can never really focus when he is low. The good thing is a glucose tab or even cany will bring you up fast. I tested him at 54 one time and gave him a glucose tab and within 5 min he was 155. I am by no means an expert but its a crash course and my wife and I are responsible for all of his care as he is 2 years old but if you have any questions I am rapidly trending to the expert space...
Hang in there! It should not be an issue with rolling once you get to know how you react to food and exercise.
