anyone training/believing in kung fu?!
Is any of you currently training on some sort of kung fu like style?
My buddy I take sambo with is a ten year chinese eagle claw practicioner. I'm gonna start in January. To look at him you'd not think that he could do all the forms and stuff, but he can. Really really well, too. I'm doing it for the flexibilty and conditioning.
I don't think the forms are very practical for MMA style events, or streetfighting. But I could be wrong. I do think there is a good amount of focus, relaxation, and discipline involved in weapon\hand forms that appeals to me.
There are a couple people that have or still are here on lock flow.
Whats up?
i always wanted to do some taichi during my past time...just cant really get the 'feel'...
I have a few friends in L.A. who take part time classes (aside from BJJ/Kick Boxing) to practice, I think, White Tiger Kung Fu. From what they tell me there is a lot of practical stuff, and the dicipline and focus transfers to the other arts as well. Take from it what you can, be sure to stay well rounded and versatile though.
sanshou rules are fun if nothing else...
I have kung fu. Do you have a question?
Once upon a time I took a day of of boxing trainning with Big Roy and I went to a Kung Fool school for a day. I left after we started doing yoga and the "Master" told me to get in the tree hugging postion.
He the told me to " bear hug the imaginary tree like a biiiig brother" , yea.........................?

Is Big Roy the name of your cock or an actual person?
I just asking because I had a reeeeeaaalllyyy long conversation with someone who tried to convince me that using tsi(inner energy or something) you can achieve stuff such as beat someone like Waderlay Silva etc. I thought the best way to show him that he was wrong was a quick round of light sparring. We sparred but he did not change his mind, until I got him to the ground and tried to pull painful submissions, like pressing my elbow against his face. It seems that pain got him thinging, but he still did not change his mind. Anyway maybe eagle claw, drunken master and the old time classic farting elephant really work...maybe
I think you are talking about chi or japan it is ki. It is more theoretical than a reality. And even in theory it takes years and years of practice to be able to apply in a situation. Check this out from another thread:
I've taken these vids off another forum but it was so funny I had to share! Now this is the link to see some amazing Chi at work by an old master.

The thing is, this guy hyped himself up a bit and put out a challenge to see if anyone could beat him. The prize was a million yen, all the entrant had to do was pay up a deposit first and sign on the dotted line.

For people that do not believe in Chi, just look at the Vietnam monks who could set themselves on fire and not flinch. I could go on but I think that can settle my point.
I find Kung Fu too complex, its just me.. too many long forms to learn for my taste.
But I still train/believe in KARATE!!! lol
Can't get rid of the enjoyment of doing a traditional art. is that a sin????
i use to take sothern mantis kung fu.....but i left after iaske dhow to defend a takedown and one of the instructors said "a takedown....they can;t take you down" hahahaha. Anyways, i mean i still love and respect all martial arts, just not the martial artist who go overboard with shit. Or Mcdojo and BS martial arts guys. My uncle is like brainwahsed to beleive that his Mcdojo master would beat anyone hahaha he was watching Wanderlei/Rampage 2 with me and goes "this isn't real fighting...it's just street fighting...my master oculd beat that Wanderlei guy, he just needsto attack his center"...WTF you gotta be joking. Man i wanna fight his master SOOOOOO bad, he's eat left and rights and then a takedown..some GnP and a submission...preferably a choke but armlocks'll do :P
i know well wing-chun
its effective and kind of simple
i dont mind people saying traditional style dznt work in real fight wutsoeva...or they dont need phylosophies of the style and its funny name...just shut up, do ur own thing, and get a better life...respecting others is more important than being arrogant...say if u r a doctor and u dont need a mechanic...fix the car urself...though doctor is viewed as a 'superior' job, respect the mechanic whos willing to get dirty and make a living out of it...at least he dznt steal from anybody..same goes if u dont need some fancy footwork and flashy moves, do ur thing....enjoy ur 'superior' style and leave those who accept the 'less good' style...their qi/chi flow never interrupt ur electricity supply...n dont forget we are all mere human beings...no matter how strong, how rich, how great we have become, we r still gonna die...yes plz bury/burn them together with the arrogance and see if u can be resurrected...
note: keep the forum friendly plz...everyone will benefit from that...

thank you, nicely said. not everything is for martial, part of it is for art or most of it. don't have to learn or use it, but respect it.
I did Kung fu for a year and a half. Everything I learned was relavent. The thing is you have some people who don't know how to translate what they learned into everyday defense. If you pay attention to the forms you use the moves in all fight, just not as ridgid. And as for qi, it is just when you have train yourself to the level of Wand and every just comes out of you. Not magic, just intense focus.
i took some kung fu when i was a kid. i think it was good to learn a base from but it's just not that practical in mma or street fighting.
i think that a lot of the schools still out there that teach the fundamental idealisms of discipline and respect that go along with true kung fu, and, of course the punching and kicking, are a great place for kids to start.
I think sometimes people get the wrong visualization/idea about Kung Fu. Mainly Here on LockFlow because, well, 99% of the people are doing MMA. I might be wrong but all MMA pretty much looks the same from school to school. With kung fu however, there is all kinds of variations. Some styles are all acrobatic. Some styles work constantly on their forms. Some schools they do stuff that makes you shake your head in disbelief. And ill be the first to addmit theirs alot of silly crap out there. But that doesnt mean there isn't a school out there with real fighting skill.
Thanks for keeping this friendly, a post like this could eaisly go wasteland. - good job on staying positive all.
while i was in the service i used to sparr with a guy who was about 10 years into kung fu, it was one of the W__C__ styles. i practice sambo/judo. we sparred a couple of times (a little over 15). i won most of our sparring matches(when i would lose it was normally to a eye swellin shut) . his punches and kicks(specifically the short kick to the inside of the knee) were quite strong, i actually took a couple of ideas from our match(kickin the inside of the knee).
i would say that as far as boxin and kickin its not so bad, but all i had to do to beat him was get him on the ground.
I took one class (2hours) I do not know which style it was. The experience was wonderful, the art and forms are beautiful. My legs were killing me for a week though, too much staying crouched.
I started training in Kung Fu in 1981 so I guess I know a little bit about it. My styles of Kung Fu are Vietnamese (philong quyen, la han quyen & lang thu quyen). I took a couple of years of TKD in the mid '90's, I boxed for a couple of years, took Judo in the late '90's (6 months), fenced for the past 6 years and I'm currently training in Jiu Jitsu. I've taken a few Karate classes (goju ryu, shorin ryu & shotokan) along the way too. Everything I do eventually ends up looking like Kung Fu since that is my base style, flowing & circular.
Those of you who think Kung Fu is not worth the while are sorely mistaken. Kung Fu takes much longer to learn due to its intracacy. Eventually it pays off. Those of you who think it won't work in full contact fights are mistaken. I won ALL of my full contact fights in the 1980's & 90's except for the MSKA Heavyweight title fight which I lost to Trey McAdams (out of Tulsa, OK). Those of you who think Kung Fu can't grapple obviously don't know the depth of different Kung Fu styles, Chin Na comes quickly to mind. Those of you who think Kung Fu would be easily defeated by MMA are mistaken. From my first grappling classes I was able to keep pace with the students with 1 to 2 years of training and I could dominate the ones with lesser training. After 5 months of training (so I actually slightly understood what my oponents were trying to do) it became rare that I was submitted by most people in the class, except for the black belts. My kicks, punches and stand up in general, are better than the grapplers and before they can grapple with me they have to get to me.
Kung Fu's main problem is its complexity and the amount of time needed to become profecient. ALL styles have their stregths and weaknesses. Anyone who tells you one style is the best is either a fool or a liar. As someone stated previously it usually comes down to the practitioner and not which style he uses.
Good post Philong.
Since I've done Kempo, and Kung Fu in the early 80's stopped training for awhile while I was in the military and started up again when I got to shore duty.
I was super lucky to find a school liked I did. they did everything from Judo to kung fu. Its there that I started out in Akido, judo.
Found out akido wasnt for me moved to Wing Chun and Long Fist.
Long Fist was not for me. I ended up doing WC, Judo, Jiujitsu.
When I was doing Kung fu in the 80's mostly forms. Not the greatest fun but I did like most of it. Seeing how we never spared with it i know now that I prolly couldn't pull off anything from then.
The WC class I had was great we do class do our forms chi soa and then spar. But we spared different..... WC vs WC is what most ppl work on but in out class its was always trying to apply it to a Karate guy, boxer etc... So we learned how to apply some of our tatics when we fought someone outside of the WC class.
I believe that most all MA even some of the grappling forms set up for failure when they just spar using the same stuff vs same stuff.
I believe you should always mix it up try to throw that monkey wrench in and see what happens.
Everyone on here seems to have a story where the beat up a kung fu guy. Well me, I have a story where a Kung fu (wing chun) guy beat the hell out of me. It m8ight have helped that he was a judo, and jj black belt as well.... But still He claimed his main art as Wing Chun. I hasve never seen faster hands, or more power...

 Whoaaa...
hurmmm...if im a really good fighter..i might just say my main art is tushkahoma and later slam my opponent
I've seen some good Wing Chun, Hung Gar, and Bagua Quan(sp?)people that could hold their own. I actually might start taking up Kung Fu again(I haven't trained in it since '93ish)mainly due to crappy stand up schools in my area..good bjj though.
ever since I watched bloodsport i've been practicing smashing bricks with dim mak once every couple months. i'm moving along nicely, I almost chipped one the other day. I've also been working hard on my diet and exercise. I've cut down to 3 bags of cheetos a day and did a situp when I got out of bed today. this morning I sent off my application to fight in the kumite next week. wish me luck!
