Boxing vs MMA????
i was thinking about this today and i noticed that I personally have rarely heard anyone mention art Jimmerson vs royce gracie as any type of an example for this argument.
Wasnt art like a top 5 or 10 ranked boxer at the time?
just looking at that fight today should end the argument right there. look at how much MMA and the average MMA fighter has evolved since then. How much has the average boxer evolved in that time frame?
obviously i dont really want to start a huge debate because this is an argument that no matter what no one wins.
i think overall the MMA fighter wins 90% of the time.
he was ranked pretty high at one time. You can still find a lot of his boxing fights on Youtube

Comparing an elite boxing purist to an elite MMAist is like comparing a butter knife to a multi-tool. Its not really a fair comparison b/c the MMAist has so many more ways to win. Im not bashing boxing Im just stating the obvious. Boxing is good for standup and that is it. Take the boxer down and his tools are useless.

Not really fair. His was paid to show, unlike every other fighter, and he fought Royce was supposed to win because the point of the 1st UFC was to show how good BBJ was. It was a little fishy.
Been beaten and scarred, you'll never break me. I'm born again hard.
Kinda silly argument IMO. Boxing wins in boxing, MMA wins in MMA.
don't let anyone tell different. boxing is a very good tool for selfdefense. if randy cotoure wins the fight. don't mean boxing is not good. gotta remember randy won not only cause of his wrestling before, but he was a boxer. and he does dirty boxing in mma.
alot of bjj guys now a days train boxing. bjj alone won't cut it in mma. mma is king so far as far as fighting goes.
boxing and wrestling and catch as catch can wrestling are our sport. all these things came to north america and we perfected it. and reading the history books. we kicked but all over the world. gotta remember too. old time grapplers practised boxing. they put them together. which made them pretty dangerous.
boxer, well even back then they didn't practise wrestling. not many anyway. jack dempsey did catch wrestling. hand to hand combat etc. he was the smart one.
I was @ the 1st UFC. One thing that really stood out to me was the record that everyone had in their own sport. I don't know if they announce them on the video of the event but I remember the brochure. Before the event even started my friend and I were shocked because you had Royce, who listed his BJJ record at like 88-0 or something. Shamrock was using his pancrase and bare knuckles = 50-5 or something. Pat Smiths shotokan record was ridiculous. Then Jimmerson was like 33-18 (according to wiki).

sorry for all the 'or somethings' that was long ago. My point is, it REALLY stuck out because the claim was "the best from each art". Just looking at the records it was clear that he was not anywhere near the best boxer.

No doubt he wasn't the best boxer, but he was probably the best boxer they could get to fight in the event. The best boxers wouldn't step into that situation, the money was nothing in comparison to what they made as well as when they lost it would have been detrimental to their bottom line and reputation. Jimmerson wasn't the best boxer around, but was a well accomplished one.
