Cain Velasquez explains his "Brown Pride" tattoo -vid
Definitely a double standard. But That's Life. Deal With it.
Let's do what those kids in Oregon wanted to do and start a "White History Month"
You shouldn't be proud of your origins any more than you should be ashamed as they are something you had no hand in choosing.
On a side note, I am thinking of getting a "Blonde Pride" tat.
Also, why is he so proud of his father for crossing the border 7 times? Why not 1 time, legally? It can be done. Why even be proud of citizenship, legal or otherwise? How about being proud of his hard work or any thing else even mildly constructive?
America has largely murdered the Mexican economy, I think most of them deserve to be here if they really want.
Yay, pride of skin pigmentation
It's irrational and there's more negative that comes out of this kind of attitude then there is positive effects.
It effectively segregates people and increases the chance of discrimination and counter acts any efforts of achieving diversity and acceptance of the differences between us.
Such pride in the end speaks of one ethnicity being unequal to others (either superior or inferior) and I simply cannot respect that.
We'll always have these feelings (at least for the foreseeable future) and that is why we have sports to vent these irrational loyalties. At the end of the game it remains a game so that is why I have nothing against "homers" and do have a big problem with partisan politics Somehow it is a sign of stupidity to support a single team instead of the sport as a whole and a sign of intelligence to blindly support a political party, ideology and (coming back to the topic at hand) colour.
So yeah, because he's brown (ethnicity) and his dad crossed an imaginary line (nationalism) 7 times doesn't make him or anybody else any more special then other "coloured" people no matter how proud he is about it.
i am Hispanic but i will admit that there is a double stand? if i white guy had a tattoo like that the media would label him as a huge racist. i also agree with deadwolf; things like that lead people to view or feel that one ethnicity is better than another. i am proud to have a parent that is Mexican but i am not going to get a tattoo for that. such things will not help create equality for all it can only hurt people
People should have pride in things that they achieve or accomplish. Having pride in things you didn't earn is bullshit.
However, the term "white pride" is not disliked for it's sense of personal affection for one's own ethnicity/race. It is disliked for its use by white supremacist groups and the use of that term definitely conjures that correlation.
Terms like "brown pride" and "black pride" were created in the 70's as a retaliation to the use of the term "white pride". The people that used the brown and black terms did not have a history of racial persecution on the level of the KKK associated with those terms.
Though the weight of the terms are different, it is still ignorant to place pride on arbitrary physical characteristics via ethnically exclusive phrases that are scrawled on your chest. The price for this insensitivity? Having to explain on an ESPN video why you are not racist. Now go get a "white pride" tattoo on your chest and explain your way out of that one.
PenThief....good post.
I have 'PRIDE' tattooed across my stomach and while some make assumptions those who know me personally know that there is no racial meaning behind the tattoo and that is all that matters to me. I have friends of all ethnic origins and color who have never had to question where I stand on racism, especially those that I served with. I have accepted the fact that people will always be quick to judge based on appearance and Im fine with it. I can actually relate to Velasquez in that aspect, Im sure his tattoo sparks similiar judgemental thoughts.
That's an interesting experiment that you have inadvertently begun just with body art. Whereas his tattoo has more obvious connotations, your is simply a word. That means that most people must assign their own meaning to it. That reveals more about them than you.
Its funny what people assume is behind a simple word, but I imagine they have a full character profile on you by the time they are close enough to read it.
I still think it would be funny to get a "Blonde Pride" tattoo b/c these same goons wouldn't know what to think.
Well put Enig, it just shows how ignorent and judgemental people really are. Just haveing a substantial amount of coverage brings scrutiney, it doesnt matter what the art is.
Blonde pride would be comical.

FREESTYLE AMERICAN SHOOT TEAM Thanks to eagles for the sig!

Still a double standard.
