Decided to Train on Vacation... Got a Grade 1 Shoulder Separation
If you saw my post about looking for schools in New Jersey, I found one about 20 minutes away from our vacation house. Everyone there (minus a few students with egos) was very humble, one of the instructors worked with me the whole time going over some basic arm locks from side mount. When it was time to roll I tried to go over to my cousin who was with me (since we only see/spar each other once a year on family vacations) and they made us go with someone twice our size instead. Which i had no problem with.. until someone did a shoulder throw on me and landed full force on my shoulder.. heard it pop like 8 times. I finished the match, tried to do one or two more but my shoulder wasnt having it. Thankfully one of the students there was also an orthopedic surgeon and checked it out for me. He said it was only a grade 1 separation (luckily) and with some rest/ice it should be better in 1-3 weeks. Right now, it puts me in a ton of pain just trying to lift my arm above my shoulder.
Pretty bummed out, not because I'm hurt, but I've been training for a tournament all summer that I probably cant do now (and having to take time off for training)
But.. it was a pretty decent school. I didnt see many egos (other than in some of the white belts but thats typical) and the instructor was top notch. All the guys there were very respectful and welcoming. The only thing I didnt like was the way they matched people up to roll.. they had little guys (my cousin and I are only 140ish) but they never let either of us go with any of them. Just seemed odd to me.
I had the same thing happen to me in our regular class on a Saturday. My instructor (who was a Ranger medic) saw it happen and based on how I landed, he said it was probably a separation. I went to Redi-Med, they took a couple X-rays, said it was a separation, and told me to follow up with an ortho on Monday. So I did.
The ortho took his own x-rays, chuckled, and told me my collarbone was broken.
Not that the surgeon didn't know what he was talking about, but Redi-Med mis-diagnosed it even WITH x-rays.
Ah man, sorry to hear that eagles. Hope you have a speedy recovery buddy.
A teammate of mine just dislocated his collar bone last week from a basic head and arm throw. It was nasty looking. You got lucky bro, hes in a sling.

FREESTYLE AMERICAN SHOOT TEAM Thanks to eagles for the sig!

Sorry you got hurt, glad it was pretty minor!
