Dislocated Toe

Yea. I was rolling from knees, went for a takedown, but left my pinky toe under my foot and put my weight on it to finish the takedown, and it dislocated itself. I don't mean a little bit, I mean perpendicular to the rest of my toes dislocated. Man alive I freaked. I looked down and saw that, and my instructor was like "Oh man, that sucks. Want me to pop it back?" I said no, and did it myself and finished rolling that night. It still feels really weird and I actually re-dislocated it when I was rubbing it to see where the swelling was and see if it was actually broken. I think I've actually torn the tendon that holds that toe in place. Any ideas for recovery besides taping it to the toe next to it and advil?

nothing they can really do for toes... or fingers.

tape should be sufficient. you best bet would be to stay off of it, but with that said ive always toughed broken toes out. so yah your call

NOT THE ER!!!

On a more serious note, a toe is rarely critical. The only worst case scenario is if the blood supply is compromised - cold and pale. When I see toe injuries in the ER, I get an xray (because that is why the patient is there, natch). If it is broken, I put them in a hard bottomed shoe and have them follow up with podiatry. If it is not broken, I put them in a hard bottomed shoe and have them follow up with podiatry.

I have not examined your toe, and I cannot provide specific advice to you because of that.

Yea. Thats what I thought. I knew an ER wouldn't be able to help me any (plus my moms a nurse). I was just unsure if there was anything besides taping that I could do that would help it.

A stiff soled shoe that prevents the body weight from coming up onto the toes helps with toe pain.

Use the RICE method and maybe give yourself a week off of rolling. Just do the slow motion drills for a while until you feel ok to seriously again

I HAD THE SAME EXACT INJURY! about 4 months ago. my second toe was dislocated perpendicular. went to the ER and had it set. You already set it, so just tape it together and wear wrestling shoes for rolling. BTW i tore my tendons and i still cant bend my toe.

whisky and a hack saw should work...nah on a serious note just tape it and try to stay off it for a while.

I did the same thing before. I just iced it and taped it up for class. It bothered me for about 4 weeks though. . .

Take a week off with lots of RICE then just duct tape it to the rest of your foot.

To me, Judo is like a ballet, except there's no music, no choreography, and the dancers knock each other down.

I consider myself some what of an expert when it comes to broken toes. With two decades of Tae Kwon-Do and over a decade of BJJ I've broken 8 of my 10 toes.

I have fixed them all myself without going to the doctor. Because of that 3 out of the eight toes are screwed up. One pinky toe is in the shape of a swollen "S", the other pinky toe is sideways and one of my big toes gets painfully locked in position sometimes and I have to pause my roll and "un-stick" it. On a bright spot the other 5 look great.

Every time my toes would break I would tape it to the toe next to it. When the swelling and pain was gone I would only tape it while rolling. After a month or so I would take the tape off completely.

The worst part for me is breaking your toe in the winter. It's too cold to wear open toed shoes and your foot will no longer will fit in your shoe.

I've always found buddy strapping to be more painful than just taping a single toe. So I tape up the one toe well and then put a length of tape around the foot where the toes attach to the foot. Makes it more comfy and feels nice and secure, plus it's less likely to come off when sweaty.

Broken toes and fingers are an occupational hazard I'm afraid, so after a while you'll become an expert in dealing with them.

Make sure you see a doc if the toe turns pale and cold or if it becomes really swollen and red. You can treat them yourself, but if you are concerned because they look weird or they are causing you issues for too long, then make sure you follow up with a doctor's visit. Same rule of thumb for a bunch of minor injuries.
