i thought the same thing myself. but it looked like it was being used as bait for a make shift trap. this guy does outdoor survival training as well.

Kids, after smashing the assailants face with 8 plus blows, throw them to the ground and stomp their face, throat, groin, and stomach until the police arrive.

Complete overkill. This is their bully program! If your kid conducts himself at school with these combative movements you will be picking them up from Juvenile Hall and facing law suits.

Howabout a simple: Get away from them system?
Break the grip and run. Stomp the foot, break the grip and run. Throw a quick combo, break the grip and run.

Seems better than elbow, elbow, head butt, eye gouge, throw them to the ground and stomp them into their grave?

I don't feel that the kill all hardcore training is really appropriate for kids, even most adults. In the school environment or bully situation do they really need to assault the person or simply defend themselves from the person?

Great example of overkill around 4:40 mark. Child is bearhugged (double underhooks): he responds by gouging the eyes, throws the "bully" to the ground, wing chun straight blasts the downed "bully" and stomps on his head once for good measure (made sure he got a nice kill).

you bring up a good point, but i have seen kids practicing breaking the grip techniques, etc. it just seems insufficient to me. i am of the mindset, for kids and adults, that you should be over prepared. i think the saying is something like.....rather have it and not need than need it and not have it. i would hope the instructor is teaching them the times to use restraint. if and when my kid (only 3) decides to train, i would have no issue with this kind of practice.

a friend of mine teaches a kids class and almost all of them have never even hit a focus mitt or punching bag. even the higher belt ranks and older kids dont know how to make a fist. thats not good.

if you cant beat them, arrange to have them beaten.

another point that zombiekev brings up is that teaching techniques like that to kids can be pointless. Do you really think they are going to be able to do that to someone twice their size? No. The guy will just punch them in the head, pick them up, in throw them in their car. A much better approach would be what Zombiekev described. However, for adults I dont think so. If you get attacked, especially in a case where you need to protect your family, I am in the mindset that you better stop your attacker before you run. Now, of course, different situations call for different responses, but if you try and just knock the arm off and run, you better hope he doesnt have a gun in his pocket. We always say "its not over kill, its over skill," in that if the first thing works and stops him great, we walk away. But if the first 6 dont work, we still have the next 6 ready to go.

Now, maybe you teach the break the grip, stomp the foot, and run to the kids as beginners. Then as they progress you teach them "extensions" but stress the dangers of them, and stress the fact to run and get away at what ever point you can. This way they understand how to flow and learn new techniques, but they also understand that avoiding the situation in any way possible and getting away from the attacker is the ultimate goal. Especially when its a bully their own age, they should simply do enough to defend themselves. That was at least how it was taught when I was a kid coming up through the ranks. I also really liked one thing my old instructor did, he would make all the kids interview a lawyer on the legal aspects of self defense, and how far one could take it before they would be breaking the law.

On a side note, I still think that video was awesome lol.

And chaz, I love that vid. That little kid is a beast haha.

all excellent points eagles and i agree with much of it but, i would much rather a kid know soft targets and have the ability to neutralize an attack.
(i am tired and cant type this out so here is a list)

in order of importance:
avoidance
talking their way out
getting an adult involved
running
restraint in the event of having to defend
knowing when to step it up and do what they have to

breaking the grip and running away is fine. however there is always the chance that the kid being bullied is weaker and slower than his bully. so in dire situations he may not be able to break away or outrun whoever happens to be the aggressor. thats when the good old shot to the nuts or eye gouge comes in handy. not to mention it can work just as well on an adult.

i have been keeping up with the news a little lately and didnt realize bullying was such an issue. kids are animals now. young teens and preteens committing suicide over threats from other kids, young people afraid to go to school b/c of harassment. all that is just madness!
i am all for teaching peaceful resolutions but the environment sometimes just wont allow. they need to be properly equipped. sometimes you have to kick ass and take initials, dont slow down long enough to take names.

if you cant beat them, arrange to have them beaten.

I think that's cool. I would put my kids into something like that, if I had any.

Been beaten and scarred, you'll never break me. I'm born again hard.
