At UFC 140, fans went delerious as Jon Jones and Frank Mir came back and won their fights with great finality - Jones left Machida unconscious, and Mir broke Big Nog's arm. Pioneering MMA figure Erik Paulson was less impressed, via his Facebook page.

"A little bummed out to see Mir break Nogeras Arm and not check to see if he was ok after the Fight. Also to see Jones Drop Machita on his face after he knew that he was out! safety and Well being of your Brothers after you share sweat and blood. then don't care about their well being. leaving a statement for the next generation of fighters that do it to you someday"

Yeah, no remorse shows something about their character. What if it was them on the recieving end?

Gotta say I was a little bummed out about that too. Kinda sucks that Greg Jackson had to get on Jones' back to get him to go check on Lyoto

Too much Cobra Kai going on lately.

It is what it is, with or without your reaction.

a true legend must honor and respect his oponents as well as the sport's code... Both jones and Mir made a bad example for any mixed martial artist

IMO this is blown out of proportion. Both guys went in, fought a fair fight and did a great job. Mir applied the submission with no tap from Nog until after the break. Jones let Machida fall after the ref intervened but he let go right away. I don't think he's bound by sportsmanship to gently cradle his opponent to the ground.

Just so you know I love big Nog more than anyone on this forum. As far as Jon Jones goes all I can say is that he's earned the spot of champ by a wide margin.

i like how josh barnett always to check on the opponent after he beats them. you actually see him talking to them and checking on them to make sure they are okay then he celebrate and then check on them again. Wish alot of fighter would do that.

I watched all the fights after so I didn't see who checked on who.    It did catch me by surprise when Jones just dropped Machida like a bag of potatos.

Don't know that I've seen that, seems like the overwhelming majority of people check on their opponent and wouldn't just drop them. I guess there is no requirement or rule, but still I think it would be nice to see it.

To not do the class thing speaks volumes about the individual on an extreme base/gut level.. same as you can tell alot about someone by the friends they keep.. it shows whether you notice it or not.. without any kind of honor between combatants and no compassion for the defeated.. you're nothing more than a mercenary and definitely not a martial artist... I'm starting to expect to be disappointed by people in this era of nothing being more important than the individual.

Personally, I don't think Sensei Paulson's words were directed towards the fighters so much as they were at his students.  I took it more as a friendly reminder that as students and instructors, we can be something more than fierce animals out for blood.  That we can be warriors and compassionate in the same breath.  That we will be judged not only by our victories but the manner in which we obtain them.

In Jones' case, Id have to ask- Did he know Machida was out? I dont think he purposely dropped Machida on his face. When letting go of a submission, 9 times out of 10 you are grounded. When the reff intervenes to stop a fight, my first reaction would be to let go so that I dont look like Im trying to purposely hold on any longer.

All Im saying is that Jones probably reacted in the same way that he wouldve had they been grounded, he just let go as ordered to do so by the official. Im as sportsmanlike as they come and Im not sure that I would or would not have done the same thing.

In Mir's case, I wasn't there live, and I don't know if he went to speak with Nog at any point in the cage, or afterward. In Jone's case, It was a standing choke, so it's hard, I don't expect him to let go, know he was out and catch him. If he did know, and chose to drop him anyway, it's a bit of a bad move. But I'm on the extreme end of it. I'm the guy who'll go out of my way for that kind of thing.

Remeber Mardquart pulling his punch on Maia? The Russian who pulled out his opponents mouthpiece and help wake him up? Barnett giving his opponent a spine adjustment after neck cranking him? Rampage trying to give Ninja his trophy at Pride 28 or 29? Fedor helping Cro Cop up at the end of the round?

At the same time, I laugh at guy's like Chael Sonnen who play a role, but when it comes to actions I like to see guys but their best foot forward. So obviously, a huge +1 to Dr Sick.
