Fighters and Tattoos in general

Just something I've been thinking about lately... I have a lot of ideas for tattoos I want to get (won't be for a while), and I've shared them with a lot of people. A lot of people seem quite disgusted with the whole idea of tattooing- they ask me if I want to look like white trailer trash. Especially when I mention getting tattoos of writing in another language, if it's not somehow part of my culture (ie. Gaelic-I'm Irish, Latin-I'm Catholic).

The reason I would get a foreign language tattooed on me is not just cuz it looks cool, but because I wish to pay homage to the culture which the language belongs to. Kanji tattoos- respect/admiration for fighting spirit of samurai/bushido code, Greek tattoo- respect/admiration of Spartan culture. I knew about Leonidas and his men long before the movie came out, and I've read ancient texts about them as well, so don't think it's just a "300 was dope I'm getting a tat!" idea.

Other people say tattoos are ridiculous and white trash, but I look at all the fighters who have them and they defintely don't look/act like white trash. So it got me thinking.... it seems like the "Fighting Culture" consists of a lot of passionate people. People who know what they believe, and believe so strongly that they are willing to tattoo it on their bodies to show other people what they hold valuable. Fighters get kanji tattoos because they have a common respect for the ancient samurai spirit, or they get a tattoo of another culture because they respect something in that culture. Maybe it's because I'm part of that fighting culture and see more fighters than white-trash....

Some people think "Tattoos-white trash/wannabes", but I think "Tattoos- passion, determination- fighters!"

Just some random thoughts to tickle your brain with

All the tatoos I've put any thought into to get done have a meaning or was a part of my life. I've spent the last five years trying to figure out how to put my mother and two brothers memorys into a picture that I can put on my body. If you care about it and you like how it looks and you can live with it for the rest of your life it really doesn't matter what other people think. At the end of the day if you still like it do it.

If a symbol has meaning to you, then there's nothing wrong with representing that meaning in the form of a tattoo.

F what everyone else thinks...just my opinion. Trashy tattoos are usually homemade, and came about with "0" thought. A well thought out and researched tattoo represents the person wearing it, in most cases.
All of my tattoos have meaning, even my tribal sleeve. Most warrior tribes dont or didnt get tattooed until they completed a test worthy of manhood or warrior status. I started my tribal sleeve after my first tour in Iraq...just an example of a tattoo that most percieve as a "random design" with no history.

It's not even a discussion, my first one was in thai down my right arm, and every time someone sees it they got a dumb question or comment and i couldn't care less, people who know me know the stories with my tattoos and everybody else can stare all they want but i didn't get them to look cool and educate ignorant people.

If you are going to get a tattoo, think about a few things first.

Where on your body are you going to get it? I see people with tattoos on their hands, necks and even faces. My company won't hire you with visible tats. If your arms are tatted, they make you wear long sleeves.

Secondly, make sure the tattoo is something you are going to be comfortable with for a long time (like the rest of your life). What seems really meaningful now, like a woman's name, may not seem that way in 10 or 20 years.

Also, make sure the artist doing the work is really good. Look at pictures of past work to make sure. Even better it to see the actual tattoo up close.

It sounds like you have put a lot of thought into what you want. As long as the tattoo is meaningful to you, it doesn't matter what anyone else thinks. Good luck and post pics when it is done.

Speaking of tats, a little trivia quiz:

What is the most commonly removed tattoo?

What is the least commonly removed tattoo?

For the first I'm guessing someone's name?

The second..... don't know, maybe a cross?

Y0u are correct on the first one sir. Names are the most commonly removed.

Least commonly removed are the numbers tattooed on Jews held in concentration camps during WWII.
