fists vs open hand strikes
i justed wanted to get some LF'ers thoughts on palm strikes and slaps versus using fists in a self defense situation. i feel like open hands would be less likely to end up in a broken hand. i have seen a lot of guys throw punches and make good contact just have a cast the next day. any opinions?
For me it would depend on how many guys were involved. If it's potentially more than one I'm not going to risk my hands on the first guy, but in I situation in which I would need to deal with one person and run for it I'm not gonna worry excessively about it. Good aim is still your best friend though. I'd rather be a little low and graze a dude's neck than smash my fist into his skull.
In a self defense situation I would still punch them. If you spar with gloves on all the time (boxing or MMA style) and you train as an MMA fighter then you are use to hitting with your fist, not your palm. I think it would be stupid to do all that training one way (using your fist) just to go and try to use something that you don’t train very often in a self defense application. To me that would be like me a being a great wrestler and getting into a street fight and deciding to try and use my striking stills to beat someone. It doesn’t make sense to me to use something that you aren’t that accustomed with to save your ass in a dangerous situation. Also using you palm shortens your reach slightly which if you aren’t use to throwing palm strikes, again can be awkward. I also like punches for the fact the you still hit harder and are more likely to cut someone open with your first two knuckles then you are going to with your palm.
El Quapo says palm strike. (if your barehand and want to throw 100% and not hurt your hand.) Liver Shot!
The classic rule of self defense is hard to soft and soft to hard. In other words, a fist for body shots and open palm for shots to the head. This does, indeed, minimize the chance of breaking your hand.
The Striking Viking, however, hit on the key issue. Under stress (like a self defense situation) you will revert to your training. Unless you train and practice with open hand strikes, it is unlikely that you will be able to suddenly change when the time calls for it. So, either risk breaking your hand, put in some time training self defense scenarios and working your open hand strikes.

Damn, Kyle A. Robinson beat me to it.
Yep Kyle knows exactly who to reference when dealing with self-defense and palm strikes. Bas put many men down with palm strikes to the face and liver.
In clinching distance I would say that you can generate more force with palm strikes and elbows b/c the fist would take away a few inches of space that could be used to generate more force (see Bas Rutten vs Kevin Randelman) where Bas uses ear slaps, palm strikes, and elbows to strike effectively from his back while Randelman lay exhausted on top.

When I trained at AMMA in Seattle, we used to do a lot of open hand slaps instead of closed fist punches when we were training for MMA fights. It was pretty brutal some times, too. I loved it. If you've ever been slapped by a fighter, you'll know it (especially if that fighter is Ben Fodor
).
Anyway, I don't know one way or the other, but I think that the open hand concept would be good in a self defense situation. You can be extremely effective with a hard slap to the face. I can't say for sure, but I think your attacker's pride would be hurt enough that they wouldn't want to publicly admit that they got smacked around. For some reason, open hand strikes are widely considered emasculating while closed fist strikes are not.
As far as hand safety, I would assume that since you are distributing the force over a wider area, that you would be less likely to break something or cause as much noticable damage to your attacker. I am not an expert in any way, but that's the way I see it. I almost never think in terms of self defense either so I may not have a good bead on the subject...
