Gi care
Hey guys, I just got an Atama gi for my BJJ class (started up gi grappling). How should I go about washing, drying, and maintaining it?

I picked up some Woolite DARK soap.
if you have a colored gi i recommend this or another soap for dark colors
my last blue gi looks washed out.
any body got tips on softening up a gi?
my Krugan's gi is like cardboard cheese grater unless i tumble dry with multiple bounce sheets.
anybody use a fabric softener in the wash?

When walking in open territory, bother no one.
If someone bothers you, ask him to stop.
If he does not stop, destroy him.
I use some liquid fabric softener in mine. It helps a little.

Try wasing your Gi jacket inside out. It tends to soften the inside quicker.
I don't know about those product recomendations, but I do the exact oppostie of all of them. My gi is nice and comfy and it's lasted about three years training 9 to 15 hours a week (until a recent job change).
Just my experience.
Thank you sir, I have a new ATAMA gi now worn yet. I will try all this.
I was Numbertwo name changed.

whatever care you choose, please do it often.. everytime i roll
with someone wearing a gi ,the gi smells like crap.. one guys smelled like urine
i have never rolled with anyone who`s gi did not stink like it was worn every day and stuffed in a gym bag to be worn again the next day
Have an atama single weave Gi, Unbleached.
I don't follow those rules at all and my gi has held up for a about a year and a half now with no problems. Wash on heavy duty (to get that grime and sweat out) with hot water, rinse with warm, dry on high.
Seriously after reading their care tips, you're going to need a day to dry those babies on the line outside and drying them by machine with no heat? geez, that's going to take more than 1 or 2 cycles, might as well line dry it.
I sometimes go to my classes back to back to back and so drying them quickly is really important to me so I can have it all set for the next session.
My knees gave in on both legs due to constant grabbing and pulling from knee on belly.
I just stitched them up again with needle and thread and applied an iron on canvas on the inside legs to reinforce the stitching, now they're solid.
Jacket has no problems as of yet, and it honestly feels like that baby is never going to tear.

ops I've never once followed the guide lines :D thanks for posting
Courage does not always roar. Sometimes courage is the quiet voice at the end of the day saying "I will try again tomorrow"
Here's what I've done to take care of my Atama gi:
Wash in cold water
(Do not use Chlorine bleach)
(Regular detergents are fine)
Put in dryer
(Air Fluff/No Heat)
(This will help with the drying time of your gi when you hang dry it)
(You can also use dryer sheets to soften the gi and get rid of any funk)
Hang dry the gi until dry
(No one likes to roll with someone with a damp gi)
(Although, it can be refreshing during the summer)
That's it...
If taken care of properly, your gi will last you quite some time...
This depends on your amount of use, of course...

"At least once in a man's life, he dreams of becoming the world's strongest."

I wash my gi every time I use it and rotate them.

well, I have one gi, it's a black double weave WarriorOne gi. I wash it everytime I use it, with regular temperature water (kinda warm), and dry it on high heat for 1.5-2 hrs. It takes forever to dry. Sometimes it's still quite damp when I put it on in class.
I got a new gi! It's a Blue Kagi Clubsport, it's so nice and lightweight compared to my black double weave WarriorOne. I went to Judo tonight for the first time and wore my new gi for the first time. I am currently washing it for the first time according to the specifications given in this thread, right now it's soaking in vinegar water. I hope the nice deep blue color stays!
Some good info here! It definately helps to look after your gi. I suggest having a couple if you can afford it and rotating through them to increase the life of them!
I did not know about the vinegar thing for the first wash. I'll have to remember that for my next gi.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT CARING FOR YOUR ATAMA PRODUCTS
Thank you for your purchase. We hope you will find the products of the highest quality. Please take the time to review the recommendations below to help maximize your investment.
KIMONOS/PANTS/GI SHORTS /GEAR BAGS
1. Wash in cold water.
2. Line dry or if you must use a dryer, use no heat or the lowest heat setting. This will maximize the life and minimize shrinkage.
3. NEVER USE CHLORINE BLEACH. USE OF CHLORINE BLEACH WILL
DAMAGE THE FIBERS AND REDUCE THE LIFE OF YOUR GI.
4. For blue/black/red/pink products
1. Before first wash, soak the gi in the sink or tub with 2-3 cups of white vinegar and the rest water. Let soak for 20-30 minutes and then wash. This will help set the color in your gi and minimize fading.
2. Second and future washes. Use a color safe detergent like Cheer or Ivory flake.
FIGHT SHORTS/RASH GUARDS
1. Wash in cold water
2. Line dry or if you must use a dryer, use no heat or the lowest heat setting. This will maximize the life and protect the silk screens.
3. Wash/dry inside out to protect the silk screen.
