grappling dummy
I've seen a lot of grappling dummies online for like $200 plus...
I would like to know how to make a 4-limbed grappling dummy(with a head of course) with at least 150 lbs of weight.
No 50 lbs is plenty. 150lbs of dead weight isn't lifelike at all, it will be very heavy and quite difficult to move. What do you want the dummy for? Drilling subs, throws, etc?
I have the submission Matster dummy http://www.grapplingdummy.net/ . It weights in about 80lbs or so. I can honestly say that 80lbs is plenty of weight to practice all your grappling techniques with. Keep in mind the way it's built also. The way it's designed is like a real person (in guard posture) So it's a low center of gravity and stable. Doing butterfly sweeps with that thing is nearly the same weight wise (the feeling) as it would be with a real person provided you use proper technique.
But I guess you have to decide what you want to use your dummy for.
Then 150lbs would definitely be too much. Would you really want to drag 150lbs dummy out everytime you wanted to do an arm bar drill?
I made a grappling dummy, he is right at 90 lbs and I wish he was a bit lighter. And i'm a big guy.
How I built mine -
his core is the water blatter of an old heavy bag (80 lbs) (wish I'd have filled it 1/2 way, not full)
The head is 2 yoga blocks glued together and shaped a little. Feet and hands are also yoga block.
The limbs are the heaviest guage wire I could get at home depot combined with a couple pieces of rebar. I cut the rebar to mimic the bones and taped them to the wire, left room for the elbows so my dummy has working joints.
Everything was then wrapped with batting and about 1 metric shit ton of duct tape.
Overall I like my dummy, he is pretty heavy and clunky, if I were to do it over I would change his size. I made the arms and legs a little too long. I wanted them long based off feedback from someone esle, but his wingspan probably beats Jon Jones! I've been using him off and on for 5 years now so he works. Good for basic repping drills. Arm bars from side/mount. I learned Reilly's leg knot by repping it out on the dummy. Also GnP drills, timed rounds, pound him out and switch positions every 20-30 seconds.
For some reason I can't stop loling at the grappling dummy video! I think it is the quirky music that is playing in the background.

Weight can be added using sand and what not. 50lbs should be good though, why do you want it to be so heavy?
11th dan in Parnes Jiu-Jitsu, it's one more than Ransom's. Real PJJ goes to 11!
