Grappling a female
Hi my fellow lockflowers. I train in St. Petersburg FL at the Elite training center and a Judo gym. Yesterday was BJJ class. I had the opportunity to roll with a female who happened to be a brown belt. I've read somewhere that rolling with someone who is not as strong as you helps you to see your mistakes and/or see openings you've never noticed. When we started I immediately realized that I was stronger than her and i tried my hardest not to use my strength to overpower her. With that being said, I do believe you have to use some type of strength in order to initiate/complete a move. I was able to pass her guard and attain side control. My question to you guys is simple: When you roll against the opposite sex, what is your strategy? And how much strength do you use?
I personally don't change a thing.
I roll with them the same as I would with a man their same size, rank and skill level. I think it's unfair to do anything else.
^^^ This.
The mat is the only place where everything is equal. I normally dont roll hard with newer students because I want them to utilize what they learned and smashing them isn't going to accomplish that, but for women and men of equal time and rank, its pell-mell. I dont go easy because youre smaller, bigger or a different gender. And neither should they.
usually just drill a lot of north south moves
I let them work a little, get a good postion then regain. Like above posted said i try and match what a person there size+skill

Well, my gf has been training just over a year and even brought home a bronze from the Pan-ams in Feb. So I probably roll more with a girl than most. We also have about 4 or so others that train from white to blue.
Honestly, I roll the same way with them as I do anyone else their size and skill level plain and simple. And that's what they want.
There's been plenty of talks about how to roll with people with different sizes, skills, experiences so I wont go far down that path. But the girls need to be pushed like anyone else to learn and get better.
