Has Machida changed Shotokan?
The title may be a little more confusing, but do you think that Lyoto Machida becoming a top tier fighter and world champion pushed for a change in Shotokan Karate?
Now we all know that there are some Karate styles out that that have proved practical and useful because of they way they train, such as Kyokushin and its offshoots, but we all also know that more traditional styles like Shotokan, Goju Ryu, etc. don't emphasize on the sparring, padwork, and live competition like Kyokushin. So, Lyoto's always claimed to be a shotokan practitoner, and ever since he hit the UFC he's been a mess to figure out....for most fighters. But since this has happened many other fighters seem to start adding Karate to their training, not just Karate, but Shotokan Karate. Do you think that since Lyoto has been in the UFC, it will push for a change in Shotokan dojos to train and work on more live sparring and padwork like Kyokushin and its offshoots?
i think with machida you are seeing traditional karate in its purest form..........fighting. all martial arts were intended for combat, they just have been adapted for the general public. IMO, machida has gone the other direction and adapted it for real combat sports. kumite may have been much more than scoring points. i may be fantasizing a little here but sparring matches of old might have looked a lot like combat sports.
The style of karate I practice (shorei-ryu) has an emphasis on sparring and most guys hit bags and even kickbox, but its a little more obscure than shotokan, though similar as they're both okinawan styles. But yeah alot of karate looks very similar to TKD these days...I just hope karate schools don't start throwing in MMA classes with unqualified instructors to make a quick buck off the current trend though im sure this is inevitable.
I read Chaz's post quickly and cracked myself up. I thought it said "I'm not very familiar with Japanese styles, but I have a poster of Machida."
definitely machide-esque
GSP's training roots
and then there is...............this
Slowwhite,I dont have his poster, I have his cardboard cutout, lol....

LOL!!

Interesting, I'm not very familiar with Japanese styles, but having Machida as a poster-child would seem to help any style grow...
