I was wondering what is the average amount of time it takes to earn a Black Belt intraditional Jujitsu? Or how long did it take you?

I've heard 10-12 years on average. That's just hearsay, I don't know the 'official'.

If we are talking JJJ, then anywhere from 3-5 years on average if the student can learn the basics (which what a black represents).

the whole post, post title, his name, everything was written in caps lock.
and as far as the Blackbelt i think its about 8-12 years. Guys like Marcelo and BJ got them in a shorter time, but thats because they are godly at BJJ

3 years is actually pretty quick for a shodan in an actual Japanese jujutsu ryu, unless you're talking about something like Danzan ryu that isn't JJJ...for someone with no background, that is. I would say more around 5-7 years for someone new to JJJ and 8-12 years for BJJ(I know of a few that have done it in 3 to 6). The thing about BJJ is if you don't compete much in tournaments it's going to probably take you at least twice as long to get your black belt.
The thing about Jujutsu in the Japanese styles is that it's a very broad term and can mean Koryu(very classical)to Tokugawa period and styles that are even almost identical to Ninjitsu and so on. I would look for no short cut in earning your black belt, just train and work on getting better and it will happen before you know it.

Keep training and enjoy what you do.

Yeah those ads by Lloyd made me arch my eyebrows when I first saw them a few years ago but his students are good at BJJ...so he must be doing something right.

Keep training and enjoy what you do.

i dont offiacially take jiujitsu but it took my friend 8 yrs to get a black belt. at my TKD place it takes about 4 yrs to get a black belt. ( iff you pass every belt test the first time)

I got mine through an online course. I just paid them and they sent it to me.

So what does a black belt in BJJ mean if Sherk (a non black belt) made Franca look like his grappling b!t@h?

Ok I am biased... I am just not a fan of belt systems. A black belt in BJJ probably means more then any other form of black belt. I applaud them for making it as tough as it is.

I think it just means you've seen a lot and learned a lot of cool moves :D. However, as someone pointed out to me a few days back. "In most cases in a fight most people only use 5 moves at the most."

I've never really paid attention to see if this is true but I'll keep my eyes open.

So what do you guys think?

Sherk is a world class wrestler though...But I do agree with you, Belts are a formality. After a year into training I asked my instructor how long he thought it would take me to get my black belt. I knew it took him 12 years and I was already 24 at the time. He told me it doesnt matter how long. What is more important is how long and consistintly you train. For instance I know alot of 19 year old 3rd degree black belts in Tia Kwan Do. Nothing against that art other then alot of people/instructors used to hand those out like candy, I mean what a false since of intitlement people like that have.

Dude dont knock Lloyd, his credentials and more importantly his students credentials speak for themselves. He has a large number of students tearing up the tournaments, gi and no-gi. His prices on the other hand, thats a whole other story.

When I trained in Traditional Japanese Ju Jitsu I was told it was an average of 8-10 years to reach Black Belt. But I guess the time could very every more depending on the persons training schedule though.

word. belts are for holding up your pants. since I started judo & bjj my goal has been to get good at them, not to get a certain belt. I'll respect anyone who has a high belt in those arts, because I know it is not easy to achieve. but as far as mma goes, belts don't mean shit through my eyes. i've been noticing time and time again, bjj superstars getting beat by wrestlers (hughes/royce, sherk/hermes). a high belt is no indication of how a fight will go.

It took me six years to get my black belt in judo. And that was with alot of tournaments in there.

I have a question. Are awarded blackbelts tracked? Because you can just order one online. This may be a stupid but serious question. Because from what i know blackbelts in BJJ have to sign up in some kind of association for several years or something.

I think the Confederação Brasileira de Jiu-Jitsu has a basic lineage of belts and instructors that they keep track of. Also there is another one, the International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation.

And to Hetzel-
I wasn't knocking Lloyd himself. I just think his advertisements are ridiculous and he is a little crazy about spreading his name. and yeah. his prices are pretty ridiculous too. If BJJ schools start turning into McDojo's it will be his fault.

Lets say Sherk starts doin bjj, i think it will take him less time to get the black belt compared to other regular ppl.

for example, dave camarillo did judo b4 bjj and he advanced to black pretty quick if im not mistaken...
