Please tell me if this happens to you. Since moving to Nashville I've been having the worst luck with Dr's. Every time I've gone due to any kind of illness they have always said it's viral and they can't do anything about it.

Side Note - I typically do not hit up the doc unless it's been a while, I don't go in on every sniffle.

We have a bug going through our office right now and I watched as my employees went to the doctor and came out with antibiotics. I go, I get a shrug and "nothing you can do just wait it out." I'm talking like 7 people got antiboiotics. So since Wednesday I've been coughing up lungs and all kinds of crap. I go back today, bronchitis and strep. Now my wife and daughter have it too. I'm like WTF??

Couple years ago I went in (different doc) 3 times before they told me I had been walking around with pnemonia for about 2 months.

3 trips to find out I had an infection behind my heart in 08 that kept me in bed for about 3 months.

My wife goes in today, correct diagnosis, 1st time and she's on the path to recovery.

strep is bacterial. That is why i say never finish your medication then you have a drug store a home. I had a little infected hair follicle, no problem just put myself on leftover antibiotics from a dentist visit. 300 mg cleocin, 3 times a day till i am out of pills.

Holy God DO NOT do what David S suggests.

One of the most common problems people have with antibiotics is that they do not finish their regimen. If the doctor has perscribed an antibiotic for 14 days, take it for 14 days, regardless of whether you feel better or not.

Bacteria are living things-a new generation of bacteria spawns roughly every 15 minutes, depending on the bacteria. An antibiotic works by selectively 'poisoning' the bacteria, which affects different bacteria differently. Some might inhibit the bacterias ability to convert food to energy, some might inhibit the bacterias ability to form a cell wall, but either way they work to decrease the survivability of bacteria. Not taking ALL of your antibiotic means that there is not enough 'selective poison' to stop bacteria from spreading in your system. This, in turn, allows the bacteria to build up resistance to antibiotics, which means when you get the infection again (and you will, because you didn't take your antibiotic regimen to completion), they will now have built up a tolerance or a defense against the antibiotic, rendering it useless while the bacteria tears ass all up in your squishy bits.

People not taking their antibiotic to the end is the reason why we have things like Methicillin-resistant stahpylcoccus aureus (MRSA) and Vancomycin Resistant Entercoccus (VRE).

For the record I'm not one that holds off on my meds, I do know some people who do this but it's not for me. When I'm feeling bad I do everything to get back on track. Water intake goes way up, I stick with basic foods, vitamin C. This go around I've been coughing so much I've pretty much been on water and chicken broth for 4 days. Some noodles here and there, maybe some crackers and toast. That's about all I can keep down.

Yesterday when I posted this my wife was still out picking up all our stuff. They gave me just the antibiotics. They gave her antibiotics, breathing treatment and some of the codine cough syrup to help her sleep. I got none of that.

I feel like I'm on a list or something. Smile This morning I have no voice, yesterday it started to go, today it's gone.

Well, bruceleeroy, you are probably a big tough guy and the dr's think you can handle whatever microbes attack you! Remember, you can always argue with your doctor, and you don't have to be nice about it, either. My mom is a pro at that. If you know your doctor is wrong, you let him or her know it! Doctors are only people too, and they don't know everything, and they make mistakes. Don't just take it. Your arguing could save your life.

Seriously, it's important that you finish your antibiotics, but it's *much* more important that you don't daub a little on here and there/take one pill when you get a bump on your hair follicle or a rash or whatever. That's how we get MSRA.

I will continue to make diagnostic assumptions about my health for the rest of my (longer than yours cause I save my drugs) life!
