I need some training partners for my fight in Japan.
Howdy guys,
My name's Mitch. I'm from Garden Grove, CA and I am in need of some training partners.
Here's my situation:
I've never trained in MMA before, but recently I got a wild hair up my ass and decided I should contact some fight companies and see about getting an amateur MMA fight. It's always been a dream of mine to go to Japan and I'm a huge fan of Japanese MMA so I figured I should contact some Japanese companies first. Much to my surprise, I was contacted by a representative from DEEP. He's lined up a fight for me on September 20th in Amateur DEEP. So now it's my task to train and get ready for my fight. I will be fighting in the featherweight division so I'm looking for training partners who weigh between 145 and 170 pounds. Training with me could entail going to Japan or possibly even getting a fight in DEEP at some point.
Send me a message if you have any questions.
I'll be your training partner. I'm 42.

I would totally help you out bro, but I'm in Florida. It's my dream to fight in Japan too, dude.
So, no experience at all? Wrestling, Muay thai, boxing, or anything? Man, one month and a half. I'll support you brother, but that was a bit of a hasty decision to take a fight with no training. Hope you can find a good crew to help you out. I would try and not fight, instead try to get some more experience first, possibly get the fight later.
Definitely try and get to a gym.
I wish you luck and hope we can help ya buddy.

No disrespect intended but have you done any thinking about what you've signed up for. I'm in total agreement with Viking. In the years I've been going to ammy shows, I think I have seen one "independent" fighter win. The others have gotten smashed.
Kudos for wanting to do this, but why not make this a good experience. Train for a year then go to Japan.

i tend to agree with poopsauce on this one.

Wow, Id love to go and fight in Japan, althought Ive never had any mma matches I boxed for years and have grappled and done Judo !st Dan, Id love to go and do what you are doing. Do you have any contacts?
@ Halfraq
Thanks man.
@The Striking Viking: You're an elitist. MMA is for everyone. Rich, poor young, old, man, woman, well trained or self-taught. I've been a fan of MMA for 6 years. I love this sport. I have tons of Books and DVDs on MMA, and I guarantee I have watched more instructionals than you have. This didn't happen overnight, I've wanted to be a fighter for a very long time and I have been negotiating the terms of my fight for months. Quite the contrary, foreign fighters in Japan often get better opportunities because they're a novelty. I am not being set up to fail, I have actually become friends with the DEEP representative. He personally invited me to attend a fight event in Japan as his guest. Hardly an act of someone who's just trying to exploit an inexperienced fighter.
@b thorne: I've taken classes at many of the gyms in my area. I noticed that at every single gym I tried out most of the people who taught or trained there made fun of me to my face, belittled me, tried to make me look foolish, or ignored me completely. And I'm supposed to pay hundreds of dollars a month for this? I don't have the money to pay for training, nor do I have the patience to deal with these immature people. I'm not saying that all these gyms are completely filled with jerks, I did meet a few cool people, but not enough to justify me training at any of these gyms. Thank you very much for the offer, though. It's incredibly generous of you. If it weren't for monetary problems, I'd be up there lickity split.
@flying_monkey, Fantastic, themonk88: Thank you all so very much for the offers. Again, if it weren't for my lack of funds, I'd fly out and train with you guys.
@ransom: Think I'm not ready? Evan Tanner wasn't ready when he so spontaneously started his MMA career. Truth is stranger than fiction, and not all MMA fighters have to be lifelong martial artists with years of experience to get into the sport.
evan tanner was also a state champion in wrestling; so yeah, that comparison doesn't really work.

Funny I don’t think I’ve ever been called an elitist before. I do think that everyone should be able to and should train in MMA, regardless of age or gender, for the fun of it and for the self defense aspect. But I’m not going to lie to you and you may not like it, but as an instructor I am trying to help you. I would never let a student, do what you are thinking of doing.
I also have to say, your story has a few wholes in it. You are trying to tell me that a fight promoter from DEEP in Japan, which is more or less on the other side of the global, would be willing to fly you and put you in a hotel on their tab? You? Just some guy from the U.S. who has never trained in any form of martial art and who has never had a single MMA fight.
Second if they aren’t paying for your flight and it is coming out of your pocket I have to believe that you have enough money to go and train at a respectable gym.
If they truly are flying you out there, on their tab, which is really expensive, then they must really want you to get smashed by someone in particular. Let me explain my logic. I know promoters. Most promoters are crooks and all they want or care about is money. A classic dirt bag move that they use to make a lot of money is to build up a local paper champ, meaning he has a really good record but hasn’t fought anyone. Because he is local and successful he will continually draw a lot of fans as long as he continues to win and doesn’t fight anyone to hard. This is where you come in. They bring you in, a foreigner to get smashed by a local favorite fighter and the crowd loves it. This promoter will more off you getting whooped then he will lose off the plane ticket and hotel for you.
Lastly, whether you own every DVD instructional ever, it will never make you a good fighter. Coaching is necessary, especially when it comes to BJJ, as well as training partners to practice on. DVDs and books are great for people who already have a solid base to build from, but if you don’t really understand the concepts of what you are doing and don’t have someone to train with, as well as a coach to explain what you are doing right and wrong then you can’t expect to do well.
MiniMinowa: no one here is trying to crush your dreams. Lockflow members are experienced fighters and long time fans. We have seen, time and time again, amateur fighters jump into the ring far too soon. We are just trying to look out for your safety by giving you practical advice. We want you to have a long MMA career.
dude, you can't expect to win many fights without proper instruction.
disclaimer: I am not a fighter, coach, or blackbelt. I am a nerd with a laptop and an internet connection who happens to love martial arts and MMA.
@Miniminowa
With regards to seeing all the instructional dvds and what nots, I would compare it to learning another language. You can get all the books in the world on how to speak a new language, but without actually practicing it on a regular basis with someone who is proficient, the likelyhood of you getting good is much lower. It's much more than understanding moves or watching fights. There is also the element of how you will react once you have someone else trying to impose their will on you. So I wouldn't take any of these comments as dream crushing or elitist, you should actually view them as good advice.
And if they really are flying you out there for this, knowing that you have no experience, then I would have to agree with The Striking Viking that you are getting set up for a stomping.
It's a shame that you have had such a bad experience with the gyms you have gone to. I feel like I have always been lucky with the places I have gone to. There are a lot of good ones out there. Also keep in mind that you should always have an open mind when you go into new gyms.

I have trained at many gyms across the county, several of them were in the LA area and I have never had anyone make fun of me to my face, belittled me, try to make me look foolish, or ignore me completely. I have had people try the "lets see what the new guy is made of". If every experience that you have had a gym has been negative maybe you are misinterpreting the situation or maybe you should take a look at your own behavior and ask yourself why nobody seems to be nice to you. Generally if everyone thinks somebody is an a-hole then the guy is an a-hole.

I don't know if you are trolling, or maybe in Japan they have fights on Mondays, but if everyone is picking on you, just conform and change the behavior everyone has issue with. If they do it after you change, or they get on you for something out of your control, they don't like you and will set you up for failure.

No amount of videos or instructionals can prepare you for that first checked kick without shinpads, or that first hard leg kick that hits the muscle or nerve perfectly. How many times have you had your bell rung and had to have enough wherewithal to defend a takedown attempt?
You won't get this in a month of training. All we're saying is give yourself a chance to truly learn before you fight.
Best wishes

mini: defenetly make a vid and post it over here.
hard sparring session is like a cold shower in a warm day. It feels good.
Mini Minowa,
How did you come into these gyms that treated you poorly? Did you go in there and tell them you've never trained but have a fight coming up in a few months? This kind of behavior generally can cause some bad reactions from gyms. If you came in humble and ready to learn and they treated you like that then that's a different story, and I can guarantee you that that is not the norm. If you can't afford to train than you really have no business taking a fight, its not good for you or the sport. Its also very dangerous to fight if your body isn't conditioned to take the punishment. A month or so ago a guy died in a promotion in my home state and I can assure you part of that was due to his training or lack thereof. No one here is trying to crush you dreams, we are truly looking out for you benefit.

11th dan in Parnes Jiu-Jitsu, it's one more than Ransom's. Real PJJ goes to 11!
Mini,
Have you ever been attacked by someone who hates you with the utmost intensity who actually knows what they are doing and come out on top from your instructionals you presented as your proof of knowledge? Probably not. The only reason your post/story irks me is because
A. as stated before 9/20 is a monday...
B. i hate punks that backyard train and jump in the cage to call themselves a 'cagefighter' after getting pummeled because they were too ignorant to prepare properly.
C. If your money situation is tight, wait for it to improve before you fight and train properly. How far are you from Temecula (sp?)? At Henderson's team Quest my old wrestling coach coaches there (Corey Grant) old jits coach coaches there too (Brian Harper). Go there if you want the best.
D. stop trolling.

Seriously? You have never done anything? No boxing, Mauy Thai, BJJ, Sombo, wrestling, Judo, no training what so ever? If that is the case I have to wonder what you are thinking. You wouldn’t try and join a full contact football club if you have never played football would you? Would you take a boxing match on two months of training? Think of all the things that you don’t know about boxing, now multiply that by 50 and that’s how little you know about MMA. I don’t understand why people think that you can get good at MMA over night. You are probably going to lose and the only reason you would win is by luck. Also you are probably being set up to make some one else look good. I am sure they love getting the chance to beat up on dumb Americans. Frankly I find the idea that you would be willing to jump into a MMA with so little training, disrespectful. It shows that you don’t really have respect for the sport because you believe in order to win all you need is luck. If you really wanted to take it serious then you would join a GOOD gym (not someone’s basement) and put in the time to get good enough to were you could show your opponent and the sport, the respect that they both deserve.
