IBJJF Scoring System
Hey guys, big tournament coming up on Sunday. I've only competed under FILA rules so far, so I'm just making myself familiar with the IBJJF rules.
Am I reading this right, no points for side control? Only knee on belly?
Can I score backwards, IE score mount, then score knee on belly?
Points are awarded for the passing of all sorts of guards (including halfguard and all sorts of open guards)
Good luck for your tourney!
Like azdrew said, you get your 3 for passing guard. Guard includes any sort of guard--half, open, closed, spider.
Yes, you can go from mount to knee on belly and score points for knee on belly. The IBJJF tournaments I have reffed made it very clear that you can't just rack up points going back and forth between mount and knee on belly to get points.
Keep in mind that you also get 2 for sweeps and takedowns. Advantages as well for strong submission attempts (not 100% sure on the advantages rule). I am also not sure about sweeps that end in dominant position, butterfly sweep that ends in mount for example. I dont know if you would get sweep and position points. If someone could clarify that would be greatly appreciated.
When you sweep to the mount and you hold the mount for 3 seconds you are awarded 2 points for the sweep + 4 points for the mount.
This happened to me last time I fought. I was ahead 5 - 0 and he swept me to mount from his guard in the last 10 seconds.
So remember: It ain't over 'till it's over!

It's kinda tricky...technically there are no points for side control...the points are awarded for the means of getting there. For example, you may be in your opponents guard and pass to side control - you will get 3 points not for going to side control, but for the pass itself - does that make sense?
Also let's say you are mounted - you got your points for mount...if you go back to side control from there no additional points will be scored, unless he managed to get you back in guard and you passed again...
Hope this helps a little. Also when you pass to side control, make sure to establish your control of them to get your points...same goes for mount. And if you take the back you must have BOTH hooks in to get the points!
Have fun, good luck and let us know how it goes! :D
