The kickboxers problem
Since I've started training in MMA (25 months ago). I've always been much more comfortable on my feet. My boxing and kickboxing isn't the most technical, but I'm quick enough and fierce enough that no one at my gym gives me any problems. Normally I haven't been that challenged in keeping on my feet by anyone my size so it hasn't been something that I have worked a ton against good wrestlers. I've done a bit of work with some judo guys and some BJJ guys however.
Enter 2 fresh high school wrestlers:
First day these guys are having no problem laying me flat on my back. I can usually pull guard, but the one keeps on going straight to scarf or side control. I can generally sprawl, but I will still get taken down eventually.
Just decided to rant/look for drills to help me out/ see if anyone else has had this problem in their MMA training.
lol nv had that problem wrestlings my base, sprawl and shoulder blocks are going to be your best bet on stopping the takedown so just keep working on it with these two new guys and ur game should go up alot
hands, head, hips.
use your hands to keep them at bay.
if they get by your hands drop your level so that your head is in line with their head.
if they get by that pop your hips out at them when they penetrate.
i know it sounds weird but if you meet their shot with a hip bump it will give them some problems staying with their shot.
once your hips are "popped" then work your sprawl.
that's pretty much takedown defense 101. hope it helps.
If you cant beat em, join em.
They are wrestlers so by trade they know takedown defense just as well as they know takedown offense. Workout with them, drill takedowns and learn everything you can from them. More than likely they are just turning the corner on your sprawl so ask them to show you a counter to that and so on.
Flying Monkee- Can you explain what you mean by shoulder blocks?
Pender- Great pointers!!
Wrestling has many styles and takes time to develop, keep sparring with them and you will see improvement, where you will beat them is that "Folk-Style" Wrestling (high school wrestling) is not a martial art the "dangerous" moves are illegal and submissions are not taught. Wrestlers leave themselves open for submissions, ie the double wrist lock and sweeps all day long. You must be Sakuraba to their Kevin Randleman!
Side bar, are you really "fierce" during sparring? Does that mean you hit harder than your partners? Remember leave your ego at the door, do you want to be that guy who is thought of as "fierce" or a guy whose training partners say, "he used so little energy and he still whooped me!" Just a thought!

FREESTYLE AMERICAN SHOOT TEAM Thanks to eagles for the sig!

Sounds like a good opportunity to work on your guard game ha ha. Seriously though I think the best way to improve on the "weakness" you mentioned would be to just bite the bullet and keep rolling with those guys. You may get discouraged, like I did when I started rolling the the better wrestlers in my gym but I did see improvement eventually. I don't know what level your sprawl is but if that is something you want to work on I would run 2:00 min rounds with those guys, have them take you down and just work to your feet, throw a quick combo to get them to back off, rinse and repeat. Once you feel comfortable getting up have them shoot and sprawl, once again 2:00 rinse and repeat. Once you have the muscle memory down you should feel more confidednt. Don't forget to drill your sweeps and reversals. Cheers.
