Lame Ankle Injury

I injured my ankle last night. Stepped off of the treadmill and rolled my left ankle(wasn't even working out). This is a re-occuring injury that keeps happening. You guys have any tips on how to heal it up? And maybe some foot exercises that may help prevent this from happening would be cool too. I know I'm supposed to ice it but I am not sure how much for how long or anything.

Ahh, I see. I read it as "Lame ankle injury" when obviously it is "Lame. Ankle injury."

Seriously, treat it using R.I.C.E (Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation). Ice should be applied for no more than 20 minutes at a time. There is some research suggesting that ice after the first couple of days may actually slow healing. So, use anti-inflammatory meds to control swelling after that.

I, personally, have not had much luck with rehabing my ankle (I too have a semi-chronic problem with ankle injuries). Making sure to warm them up well before working out does help avoid them though. Wearing a neoprene sleeve, especially when you get back to rolling is a good idea to support it too.

Wishing you a quick recovery.

Well I titled it lame because I wasn't even doing anything cool(like riding motorcycles). Just walkin around the house. I have been icing it on and off and I think it's helping. Should I be doing anything to rehabilitate this thing or just leave it alone? I'm a pansy when it comes to injuries so I'm not sure what I should be doing on it. I got a show to play tonight that is about 4 stories up and wondering if carrying instruments and gear would be a bad idea or not. I am definitely in a hobbling state right now. I can put weight on it fine but as soon as it twists it hurts pretty good.

They say that spraining an ankle is worse than breaking it; I'm not sure about the pain spectrum, but as far as likelyhood of reinjury, this is absolutely true.

Listen, its up to you to know how your body works. Do a ton of research http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sprained_ankle wikipedia: always a great start.

RICE is king

Rehab exercises? Yes! Remember, your ankle and your injury are different than anyone else's. Do research, sensitize yourself to the joint, to the injury, and to what movements are needed to heal. For starters sit down and use your hands to guide the ankle through its present range of motion.

How familiar are you with your feet in general? Especially as a martial artist it's important to have a working relationship with each of your body parts. self massage, stretching... i literally talk to my body. With this as a baseline, injuries are fewer, and when i do pull something 'lame' and hurt myself, its easier to identify the problems and the solutions.

I've assisted with the rehab of many knees and ankles, but in the end, the secret is that body knowledge should be intuitive.

Happy Healing my friend! Make it strong and flexible.

Jesus that is a ton of research. I know nothing about the human body. I guess there's no better time than now to start learning.

All medical things aside. What the hell is wrong with me? Even if I strengthen my ankle, I don't see how my retarded ass won't be able to roll it again. Are there any reflex exercises I should be doing? Because my problem is that I will land on the side of my foot like a douche tard and I don't see how my ankle will not roll when that happens. Should I pick up basketball so I can get used to landing or will that just up my chances of injury?

Well, I know what you mean. I feel like the majority of rolled ankles come from sidewalks and steps, so how do you prepare for agility tests at any random moment?

Strength and Flexibility. If you like, shoot me a PM and we can talk about specific exercises that I use.

Basketball as rehab for a rolled ankle probably isn't a good idea. Jumping up and landing on other players feet is a common source of injury.

FYI: My expertise in knee and ankle injuries is simply from interest and experience. I've mined a lot of data that I use personally and like to share.
