Hey guys. I haven't done very many grappling tourneys so I'm looking to compete in about 6 weeks. The thing that's kinda throwing me off is you weigh in and ead straight onto the mat. How do you guys cut weight for these? Did u use different tactics than the normal stuff to cut for day before weigh ins?

Yeah, same day weigh ins are a different deal. For your first on, I wouldn't cut more than 2-5 pounds off your normal walking weight and see how you feel when competing.

this will give you a good base as to whether or not you should do more or less for your next one... also, check with your coach/instructor... as they always should have your best interest at heart.

Have you ever cut weight before?  If not I wouldn't even worry about it just compete at what you walk around at.

Mr. Bungle is right don't waste your time cutting weight. The resaon wrestlers do it is because there are a limited number of spots on the team so if you cant beat some one that jv or varsity then you move to a different wieght class.

All ibjjf tournaments are like this.

When I went to Brazil, I spent 4 weeks cutting weight to make the light division.  I didnt do any water/hydration cut the week before and I felt fine going in at at 160, just under.  I cut 10 lbs from my city walking wait.  It was easy to cut there because two weeks prior I was training jits 2 hours in the morning, resting at the beach in the afternoon then 2 hours at night.  No stress from work, and I could easily manage what I ate.

I was tempted to cut 8 lbs for the World Nogi, but there's no way I could dedicate myself to train twice a day, work 8 hours, etc.  So I'm going at the weight I walk at (170-172) and themax is 175.5 with gear.

If I only had to cut 2-5 lbs, I could do it simply with adjusting the diet and a little more cardio.

The whole reasoning for weighing in like this is to prevent people from cutting weight so much.  I prefer it this way IMO.

Thanks guys.

Although I have cut before, I've only done it like once or twice.

It'd be like 8 pounds to cut and I walk around at like under 3 pounds the max for the next weight divison. I think I'ma jus do the natural weight class thing for me.

Thanks again!

That's your best bet.  Weight cutting should be practiced and when its upwards of 8 to 10 pounds its better to give up a few pounds in the next division up as opposed to cut wrong and lose because you gassed.

With proper nutrition and rehydration you can replenish around 3 lbs per hour. With a 24h grace period, this means you can easily cut a lot and come in at your normal weight. With something where you start the morning of, I'd figure out your time between the weigh in and when you'll be on the mat. 1-2 hrs will be about 3-6 lbs of max water absorption.

Studies in sports nutrition have suggested there is about a 7% performance difference between dehydration and peak hydration, which is going to make a huge amount of difference compared to the small amount of weight you're giving up. Better to go in hydrated and fresh than to go in a class or two lighter and dessicated.

... also, do not chug. That'll slow gastric dumping and you probably won't really absorb as much of the water, either. Sip it slowly.

I usually cut 15-20lbs over a 3 week period leading up to a fight but for grappling events I dont cut at all. After disaster hit me in highschool from cutting too much weight and maintaining it throughout the season, Ive shunned cutting weight for same day events, so for grappling tournaments, I grapple at my walk around weight.

However, some grappling tournies allow weigh-ins the day prior to competition. For an event like this, I might cut weight.
