MCL!
I might have torn it. I wont know until next week for sure but I am freaking out a little. has anyone out here recovered and kept fighting? If so tell me so I can quit being a wiener and worrying about it.
I have one now. I got it 3 weeks ago in a fight (got heel hooked). still training, because i have a pro fight in 3 weeks. my other knee is starting to hurt because its compensating for the bad one. i need to go to the doctor.
As Firecat's link suggested, MCL injuries are rarely repaired. With REST, they usually settle down and the leg musculature can provide adequate stability to compensate for most MCL defects.
Get it ex-ray. I got heel hooked, tore mcl, and it took about six months before I could even minorly train.
Get a good brace. I didn't have the money but in hind sight I wish I would've spent it. They cost in the 500-1000 range.
RICE also.
who needs legs  get rid of the leg and you can go down a few weight classes ;).
Too funny

Ouch :? i tore my ACL in my knee...8 weeks later back at training...did alot of upperbody strength stuff in that time also allowed me to heal up other injurues i had..
i tore both my acl and mcl last summer. use the RICE (rest, ice, compress, elvevate) method to treat. everyone was telling me to get surgery but i didn't. in addition to the RICE method i spent a bunch of time in the pool independently rehabbing it. granted, it took 2.5 months to even walk properly again but now i've been rolling since last october and haven't had any knee problems since then. a couple months ago i started lifting again using machines and there hasn't been any significant strength loss in my leg curls, extension, presses, etc.
always wear a support when grappling! now i actually have doubled up with 2 supports on my formerly-injured knee.
I tore both my right MCL and ACL....the MCL is not a big deal, it heals and heals well....the ACL on the other hand!!!
Good luck with everything !
ok since we are talking about knee injuries. I think i messed up my mcl today. Working on the pump from the rubber guard and went to mission control pulled the leg down nice and tight to keep them from posturing back up. Then heard and felt a loud pop, leg hurts some but can walk and even jog on it. Just curious what I should do. Have NAGA on May 3, not backing out of comp.
get better soon! that sux. i injured pulled (i hope) my MCL and really sprain my knee bad. been over 2 months and still out. the way i twisted was like an invert heelhook and it was very explosive, therefore the long and agonising wait to get back. just a few more months... :(
... damn, good luck and I hope it works out to be minor...
i do to because I if i do well at naga and especially if i catch someone in the twister, I will get my blue belt.
What, you need a twister to get a blue belt?!? strange.
Anyway I had a pro mma fight a month after i injured my MCL, so i tried to train through it. what happens is the good knee absorbs all the shock and the good knee starts to get off balance and have problems. Now i have 2 bad knees.
Rest is the only way. ive been able to drill tech and roll out of guard, but thats it. i cant strike because every punch twists my hips and my knees.
If you compete with a torn MCL, you will likely tear your ACL. then you will be completely out for 6-8 months. just let it heal.
Just got back from the Orthopedic Surgeon. I have a grade 2 MCL tear. Grade 3 and 4 may require surgery, but im good. my ACL wasnt effected.
He said with these exercises below, the MCL will heal 3x faster. My ortho was the ortho for the Denver Broncos. he said this was the most common injury and they would put the players on an exercise bike the same day of the injury.
Exercise Bike
Every other day do :
1/3 squats with weight
leg extensions
leg curls
lunges.
foot planted exercises only and NO side to side movement of the joint. Hes gonna check me again in 2 weeks.

The main reason i will definetly get my blue by subbing someone with the twister, is because I would have to go through most of my rubber guard, twister side control. so if i can get the twister then he is confident enough that I know everthing that he has taught me thus far.
There is a lot of great information on this thread!
I just recently saw a doctor for my MCL. I was grappling, had a guy in my guard and heard this loud pop with some pain and weakness in my knee. Of course I just kept grappling and then it was really sore later that night.
When i went to the Doc, they xrayed it and it came out as a sprain. The good new about the MCL is it can heal fairly quickly and usually doesn't need surgery. Right now my knee is back to about 90% after 3 weeks, so you should heal pretty quickly too.
The only thing I noticed is that my other knee, hip joint, and lower back have been super sore, I'm sure from trying to compensate for the injury. So I would recommend what others have said and just try to rest it as much as possible.
Good luck,
Keven

It's good that you went to the doc.
Not everything heals on its own, and if it does, injuries can heal detrimentally.
Take advantage of modern medical science, especially if you are young.
In many sports I have heard of young athletes that have to take time off to heal nagging injuries that were never treated or healed properly.
It WILL affect you when you are older. I have seen guys who had their injuries treated by top sports medicine professionals still hobbled at mid-life.
Also realize that no MMA fighter will have a NFL pension or millions on which to depend. Think about the number of MMA millionaires. Medical bills could become inhumanly expensive even for them, and that's if you make it to the top 1% maybe, so be realistic.
Sometimes I am alarmed at all the homegrown medical advice given here.
Update; Ive been rehabing the tear with squats, and leg extensions, etc. and after 1.5 weeks, my knee is at about 95%. im even back to standup pad work (no kicks) and full effort grappling. these exercises make a huge difference. i always did them before the injury, but thought that i had to stop when i got injured.
make sure that you do an equal amount of exercises for the hamstrings as you do for the quads (ie. if you do squats, you should do romanian deadlifts, etc.) same with all weightlifting in general. the last thing you want is your body to be unbalanced.
Bad Navy docs?
I would think they would have better medical care for you guys.
Not a good sign.
Goto a deep tissue muscle person. Not a massage, it's called bodywork. They will fix you up. Or help at least.

jk, you might be ok check this out :D
What are the symptoms of a medial collateral ligament injury?
The most common symptom following a medial collateral ligament injury is pain directly over the ligament. Swelling over the torn ligament may appear, and bruising and generalized joint swelling are common 1 to 2 days after the injury. In more severe injuries, patients may complain that the knee is unstable, or feel as though their knee may 'give out' or buckle.
Symptoms of a medial collateral ligament injury tend to correlate with the extent of the injury. MCL injuries are graded on a scale of I to III.
* Grade I MCL Tear
This is an incomplete tear of the MCL. The tendon is still in continuity, and the symptoms are usually minimal. Patients usually complain of pain with pressure on the MCL, and may be able to return to their sport very quickly. Most athletes miss 1-2 weeks of play.
* Grade II MCL Tear
Grade II injuries are also considered incomplete tears of the MCL. These patients may complain of instability when attempting to cut or pivot. The pain and swelling is more significant, and usually a period of 3-4 weeks of rest is necessary.
* Grade III MCL Tear
A grade III injury is a complete tear of the MCL. Patients have significant pain and swelling, and often have difficulty bending the knee. Instability, or giving out, is a common finding with grade III MCL tears. A knee brace or a knee immobilizer is usually needed for comfort, and healing may take 6 weeks or longer.
What is the treatment for a MCL tear?
Treatment of a medial collateral ligament injury rarely requires surgical intervention. Almost always, some simple treatment steps, along with rehabilitation, will allow patients to resume their previous level of activity. The time before an athlete is able to return to their sport corresponds to the grade of the injury.
