Meniscus Surgery!
So Ive been dealing with this acheing pain in my right knee for over a year. Up until a few weeks ago I thought I had tendonitis but could not get it to go away. Im not much for pain medicating so after trying everything (cold, heat, rest, acupuncture, ultrasound therapy) I finally decided to get an MRI. Turns out I have a posterior tear of the meniscus and a cist that has formed around it from overuse. Im having surgery next week, during which time the doc will trim the tear so that it doesnt fray any deeper. Due to the position of the tear there is no probability of it healing b/c the torn area has almost no bloodflow to it. From everything I have heard, this is a fairly simple and common surgery and the recovery time is quick. My buddy had it done last month and was walking the same week.
tat.. good luck with this and heal quick my bro.. will be going into schedule my own miniscus repair in two weeks.. will DEFINITELY be watching for updates on your progress.
There are alternitive was to train if your phyiscal body cant . You learn alot from watching i go to grapplearts.com and learn alot when iam just sitting around.
good luck heal soon !!!!
I've has meniscus repair work done on my left knee, here is what you're looking at...You will be walking out of the hospital that day with a caine, by day 3 you wont need the caine...good news is that you can lift upper body when you are rehabbing (which is what I did). You will have 2 months or soo off the mat, providing that you do your PT excercises EVERY day and Ice like a crazy person..Also..DEF get one of these...it made my rehab 1000000000000000 times easier...hell I still use it after a hard day of roadwork or training...its called the cryo cuff and it is the tits.

No worries tat, keep us posted on zee progress man! Plus this will be the perfect time to get more tats!
I had the exact thing happen to my left knee, cyst and all. Shogun is exactly right. You'll be able to walk right away, but you keep off it as much as you can for a few days.
Rehab is pretty simple. I think I had a month or so of supervised rehab. Wasn't difficult or painful at all, but I was surprised at how weak my leg was, especially when dealing with range of motion.
You'll feel like you can walk, jog or even roll almost right away, but that doesn't mean it's a good idea. I would give it at least a month before I'd consider running of training of any kind, but that's just me.
HEAL QUICK MY BRUTHA'!
Thanks to shogun for posting the advide/expeience too! \m/
No worries Kev, we are a community...sharing knowledge is what makes us stronger! Tatt, best of luck man, just keep doing the rehab stuff your pt specialist gave ya! you seem to be on a good schedule with the icing so things should be all gravy!
Hey tat, could you post the link to or the instructions you used to put that together? i would love to have one of those. Still be a few months before i can use it but i love those suspension trainers.
Great attitude as well, nothing to do but train what you can and keep it moving!
Nice, glad to hear it, fish oil has helped me quite a bit as well, i also take a joint complex (glucosamine chondroitin) ans Cissus as well. Don't really know if the cissus is really helping but i had some so I figured it wouldn't hurt. I go for my 4 week post op (really 5 week) this coming wednesday, things are going well.
Getting back into the gym was the best thing for my mood and well being. Keep up the positive attitude!
Thanks for the video as well, sorry to hear about the camera...
I would suggest doing at least a little PT. I only go once a week (today I will be going in fact). Its often suggested to go two to three times but my PT said that is usually because the majority of the population do not do their exercises and stretches at home as they should, so the PT is the only the only activity they get.
For me its the opposite, I have to work to minimize what I do. Also the aggressive stretching of the joint capsule that the PT does cannot really be duplicated on your own. (who would be that masochistic
) but it has increased ROM quite a bit.
It is interesting how an injury can stimulate positive change in your game, I have always fought southpaw as I am left handed, but I am right eye dominant so in the army I shot a rifle right handed. since the lead hand often throws angled punches, I am hesitant to through those with my repaired shoulder.
I have been working in a orthodox stance and similar to shooting a rifle, with my right hand back (similar to sighting with a rifle) I actually feel more comfortable.
Now footwork is a bit awkward but hey I have another month or to to work on it so:)
Sorry for the winded post I guess long and short is, working boxing exclusively will likely open a new facet to your game and make you even more of a beast. Have fun!
AWESOME news on the rapid recovery.. I'm going in this afternoon with a consultation with the knee surgeon and will probably be getting some new images taken of the knee and all the pre-surgery stuff.
good news!
glad to hear recovery is going well...i have a feeling i'll be in the same boat soon.
Walking out the door right NOW on my way to get my MRI @ Hughston Sports Medicine Hospital... won't get the word until the follow-up next week (wenesday).
AWESOME NEWS! Congrats!
I don't have my follow up until this coming week.. Surgeon was eyeballing it and siad that if he had to make an educated guess without seeing the images.. medial mensicus and some acl damage.. good news for me was that the left knee according to him is completely stable..lol.. the right one.. not so much..lol.. he was like.. "you can trade this one in on a new model.. I have a few to choose from!"
I'm hoping my father-in-law will return from Honduran medical trip in time to look at these this week as well.. if you got a doc/radiologist (or in my case 3) in the family.. I don't think it ever hurts to get everyones spin on whats going on in there.
Great news Tat, glad to hear you'll be back at it soon! I am jealous
Kevin, I hope for good news from your MRI and a quick recovery if surgery is needed!
Just got mine done yesterday was dreading it but it was not bad was on the table for an hour and in recovery for two. Walked/limped to the car. It is hurting but nothing I can’t stand going to take this long weekend to rest up. Hopefully I can get back to training soon.
Glade to see you guys came out great.

Sucks, but recovery goes quick. i am almost 4 weeks out from having surgery to repair a torn labrum. Though I cannot train MMA till around late July. I have found all of the small injuries i have been carrying have begun to finally heal as well. I am quickly gaining functionality back and can already do most house hold chores.
Since you are in shape and weight training and MMA get you accustomed to the trauma/heal process, you should recover fairly quickly.
Good luck, let us know how it goes.
