So Ive been dealing with this acheing pain in my right knee for over a year. Up until a few weeks ago I thought I had tendonitis but could not get it to go away. Im not much for pain medicating so after trying everything (cold, heat, rest, acupuncture, ultrasound therapy) I finally decided to get an MRI. Turns out I have a posterior tear of the meniscus and a cist that has formed around it from overuse. Im having surgery next week, during which time the doc will trim the tear so that it doesnt fray any deeper. Due to the position of the tear there is no probability of it healing b/c the torn area has almost no bloodflow to it. From everything I have heard, this is a fairly simple and common surgery and the recovery time is quick. My buddy had it done last month and was walking the same week.

Sucks, but recovery goes quick. i am almost 4 weeks out from having surgery to repair a torn labrum. Though I cannot train MMA till around late July. I have found all of the small injuries i have been carrying have begun to finally heal as well. I am quickly gaining functionality back and can already do most house hold chores.

Since you are in shape and weight training and MMA get you accustomed to the trauma/heal process, you should recover fairly quickly.

Good luck, let us know how it goes.

I've has meniscus repair work done on my left knee, here is what you're looking at...You will be walking out of the hospital that day with a caine, by day 3 you wont need the caine...good news is that you can lift upper body when you are rehabbing (which is what I did). You will have 2 months or soo off the mat, providing that you do your PT excercises EVERY day and Ice like a crazy person..Also..DEF get one of these...it made my rehab 1000000000000000 times easier...hell I still use it after a hard day of roadwork or training...its called the cryo cuff and it is the tits.

I had the exact thing happen to my left knee, cyst and all. Shogun is exactly right. You'll be able to walk right away, but you keep off it as much as you can for a few days.

Rehab is pretty simple. I think I had a month or so of supervised rehab. Wasn't difficult or painful at all, but I was surprised at how weak my leg was, especially when dealing with range of motion.

You'll feel like you can walk, jog or even roll almost right away, but that doesn't mean it's a good idea. I would give it at least a month before I'd consider running of training of any kind, but that's just me.

HAHA yeah tatts are definately on the agenda.

So I had my surgery on the 3rd, the day before yesterday, and I havent used crutches at all. Ive been walking on it as much as possible and the range of motion has increased each day. I am taking ibuprofin for the swelling and iceing it for 20min. every 3-4 hours. So far so good and I go for my follow-up with the surgeon on Fri. Take care LF peeps.

Follow up tomorrow! Thanks for all the support. Ill let you guys know how it turns out.

This will be a good time to seriously train my core and hit some bodyweight workouts on my new DIY homemade suspension/TRX trainer and further prefect my muscle ups.

Hey tat, could you post the link to or the instructions you used to put that together? i would love to have one of those. Still be a few months before i can use it but i love those suspension trainers.

Great attitude as well, nothing to do but train what you can and keep it moving!

I would post a video of the one I made but someone lifted my camera. Hence the reason I havent posted any workouts in a while.

Back on track!

Had my follow-up today and the Doc said my knee looked AWESOME! He said the I am healing much faster than normal and that the swelling and fluid is usually much worse, mine is almost normal now. He also removed the stitches. Planning on getting my first workout in tomorrow (all upperbody of course) and I cant wait. Im getting cabin fever.

A few things that I did that maybe helped speed the healing process: Ice, anti-inflammatory (ibuporfin), zinc, glucosamine, aminos and protein and just walked on it as much as I could.

Nice, glad to hear it, fish oil has helped me quite a bit as well, i also take a joint complex (glucosamine chondroitin) ans Cissus as well. Don't really know if the cissus is really helping but i had some so I figured it wouldn't hurt. I go for my 4 week post op (really 5 week) this coming wednesday, things are going well.

Getting back into the gym was the best thing for my mood and well being. Keep up the positive attitude!

Thanks for the video as well, sorry to hear about the camera...

Yes, fish oils, I havent quit taking cod liver oil and I eat a staedy diet of tuna and salmon. Fish oils and glucosamine are always two supps that I never go without.

I should be starting some PT this week so we'll see how the rehab process goes. I almost talked myself out of it b/c of how rapid I seem to be healing but figured that Id give it a go. Anything that will help get me on the mat sooner is worth doing. In the meantime Ill be core and upperbody training like a madman. I plan on getting some boxing in as well.

Hope that video helped brother. I was able to make a nice suspension trianer from that video, its well worth it.

I would suggest doing at least a little PT. I only go once a week (today I will be going in fact). Its often suggested to go two to three times but my PT said that is usually because the majority of the population do not do their exercises and stretches at home as they should, so the PT is the only the only activity they get.

For me its the opposite, I have to work to minimize what I do. Also the aggressive stretching of the joint capsule that the PT does cannot really be duplicated on your own. (who would be that masochistic Smile) but it has increased ROM quite a bit.

It is interesting how an injury can stimulate positive change in your game, I have always fought southpaw as I am left handed, but I am right eye dominant so in the army I shot a rifle right handed. since the lead hand often throws angled punches, I am hesitant to through those with my repaired shoulder.

I have been working in a orthodox stance and similar to shooting a rifle, with my right hand back (similar to sighting with a rifle) I actually feel more comfortable.

Now footwork is a bit awkward but hey I have another month or to to work on it so:)

Sorry for the winded post I guess long and short is, working boxing exclusively will likely open a new facet to your game and make you even more of a beast. Have fun!

Well put and advice taken.

I plan to do a ton of striking b/c it is by far where I need the most improvement and now I have an excuse to train more standup and get away from grappling a bit. Good luck with your new found stance and again, thanks for the advice.

I was able to get back on the mat this week and do some boxing and light rolling. Feels great and the best part is that the chronic pain that I was experiencing, before surgery, is gone.

AWESOME NEWS! Congrats!

I don't have my follow up until this coming week.. Surgeon was eyeballing it and siad that if he had to make an educated guess without seeing the images.. medial mensicus and some acl damage.. good news for me was that the left knee according to him is completely stable..lol.. the right one.. not so much..lol.. he was like.. "you can trade this one in on a new model.. I have a few to choose from!"
I'm hoping my father-in-law will return from Honduran medical trip in time to look at these this week as well.. if you got a doc/radiologist (or in my case 3) in the family.. I don't think it ever hurts to get everyones spin on whats going on in there.
