i have been helping a friend coach jujitsu at class in a local church. there is a few adults and mostly kids. i have talked about this situation before so i wont get into many details. basically, the guys heart is in the right place b/c he is trying to help people. but, he is not cut out for teaching and is passing out bad techniques and info. i have been helping him for a while and it has gone downhill for last few months. he has hooked up with a "christian association" and they are feeding him straight crap. for the last little while i have kind of been going behind him and trying to iron out the bad spots. not in a sinister way, just polishing and correcting where i can with out it being a big deal. i told myself a few weeks ago if the integrity of the "system" he is using got any worse i would walk away. no harm no foul. tonight it got worse and i could barely stand being in the room while he promoted the rubbish he was being handed from his "association". he has been a good friend for a while but i cant bear to break his spirit b/c he really believes in what he is doing.

i have been working with a couple of the older guys in their extra time and they all agree that what we do is much better. we do some cardio, drill transitions and/or one submission(baby steps), do a little live rolling, and end with some basic self defense. a good sweat and the best valid techniques (many from LF!) i can put together as we are simply learning all we can. no belts, no bullshit....just as much hard work and info we can get.

so after having said all that, i may be walking away from the main class and just go with the extra night. the folks in the class are really wasting their time, kinda harsh i know, but its the truth. tonight i didnt even break a sweat and did more correcting than i felt comfortable with. i left in a bad mood and that isnt a good sign when it comes to training. any lockflowers have any comments they can share?

if you cant beat them, arrange to have them beaten.

You gotta do what you gotta do, if it is time for you to leave then leave. Have the talk with your friend and let him know whats goin on. And having belts in a system doesnt make it fake, its the schools that give them away easier then you can get a burger from McDonalds that make it BS.

is it jits that hes teaching that sucks.or his religious views.because if its the jits.you should be a friend and kindly let him know that he sucks.and then you could stick around and help to make him successful.just a thought.

i had to quit a gym I was at for over 10 years.

#1, it was very hard.

#2, it was the best decision I have made.

he basically gives them away. after 15 years i have used the belt system and come to terms that it isnt what it used to be. he gives away "stripes" if the kids come in and say they did something nice for someone else. meanwhile, mostly all of them dont know how to make a fist. i have been trying to correct them.

its both really but the religion part is his choice, i couldnt care less about that. but the curriculum he is getting from his "christian brothers" is total crap. i have tried to help him organize what little there is that could be useful. i cant stand to see what is going on but i cant burst his bubble either. kindly helping doesnt do any good so i think i may be done with the whole thing.

@madness Oh all I was saying was that because you see a system using belts whether it be an official system or in-house system, it doesn't mean its BS, thats all. If he's giving them away that easy, I think its definitely time for you to part ways. Do whats best for you man.

oh yea, the belt system works well for tracking your progress. but only if you WORK for them. the way they are given away is building false confidence IMO. these days most places just sell them at a monthly rate Cash . it bothers me to my core to see rank unearned Sad . i may give it another week and let the thought process work it out, but i am pretty sure its time for me to move on. oh totally agreed, I cant stand it when I see 30 6 year olds running around with black belts on in a half hour play class at the school down the street from us. The way it was always told to me was there was only a white and black belt at one point in time. The white belts were new practitioners, and the black belts were doing it so long that their belts had actually turned that color form all the blood, sweat, and tears. Now there probably isnt much validity to that story, but I like that explanation. If you havent put enough blood, sweat, and tears onto the mat that the belt wouldnt change color at all, you dont deserve a new color belt anyway.

Definitely give some time to think about it, but I agree it may be a good decision for you form the situation you have described. Keep us updated brotha!

If you feel embarassed around so many blackbelts, it can be solved for the low low price of 21.95...
