Miguel Torres released by the UFC for making rape joke on Twitter
Recently UFC bantamweight and former champion Miguel Torres made an inappropriate joke about rape on Twitter. The full tweet was:
If a rape van was called a surprise van more women wouldn’t mind going for rides in them. Everyone like surprises.
The fighter defended an enslaught of critics after the comment, citing that everything should be free to joke about. It turns out UFC President Dana White did not agree, and announced today in an Q&A for Sports Ilustrated that he had released the fighter:
SI.com: And what about Miguel Torres’ tweet from yesterday
White: This morning I’m on [Michael] Landsburg’s show, up here in Canada, and he hits me with the quote of what he tweeted. Now there’s no explanation for that. There’s absolutely nothing I could say to make any sense of that. And the fact that he even thinks that’s funny or that’s a joke, it disturbs me. It bothers me. Again, you’re dealing with a guy that’s a smart guy, that owns his own business, that’s been one of the top fighters in the world forever. And I cut him today. He’s no longer with the UFC
SI.com: Was that announced today
White: It’s being announced right now to you. You’re the only one that knows. Miguel Torres has been cut from the UFC and his career with us now is over
SI.com: Was this the first time something’s happened with Torres? Or was it a second offense
White: No, this was the first time. And then he said he hadn’t heard what happened to Forrest [Griffin, who drew fire for tweeting "Rape is the new missionary" last month]. Really? Where do you live? What business are you in? How do you not hear about these things? You should have paid more attention. It’s to the point now where, there’s going be times when things happen and mistakes are made. I cannot defend Miguel Torres. I cannot defend what he said. What he said makes no sense other than when he says, “It was a joke.” Well, I don’t think that’s a funny joke. I think it’s disturbing.
Since hearing about this release from the company, MMAFighting.com's Matt Erickson has tweeted that Miguel Torres was quoting a popular TV show for the tweet he was fired for:
Just spoke to @MiguelTorresMMA via text. He assures me he was quoting from "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" and was watching it at time.
I knew what he was quoting, but posting it on your high profile twitter?! bloody stupid.
I heard he was quoting It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, which airs on FX, which is about to air UFC so it's kinda stupid to cut him IMO...
So, doing steroids doesn't get you cut but making jokes does. Strange company...
You've got Rampage dry humping every female reporter, Tito twitting his Anthony Wiener, TUF show contestants pissing on pillows and acting like morons, Dana White using every curse word known to man every time he opens his mouth. ...and now Dana is concerned with inappropriate behavior?
example made outta him. as bad as the "joke" was, wild he was cut... its freak'en torres, awesome fighter and bazzar ufc would just drop'em. unless dana was told by fox to "fix it now" type thing. weird.
Damn, he's one of my fav fighters. Shouldn't be cut for making a dumb comment IMO (especially since it's a first strike) . Should have been given an oppertunity to appologize.
LSBJJ you took the words right out of my mouth. Dana White publicly called a reporter a c--- and many other perjoritves, Chael Sonnen is constantly making racist/classist comments about an entire country, and on one episode of TUF a few seasons back someone put his man juice all over a dudes food and he ate it. Yet Miguel Torres quotes a joke from the tv show Workaholics and imediately gets cut, talk about double standards.
Is the point being missed? He's not saying women should be raped. He's saying that a certian type of van is known as a 'rape van' just like certian tee-shirts are called 'wife beaters.' Of course women would be hesitant to enter something called a rape van (a van with no windows in the back). And if you changed the label to something else the vans may not be viewed in such a light. He used the word surprise but he could have used anything like puppy van, unicorn van, pancake van, etc. I see nothing wrong with his statement.
I honestly think they acted (too quickly) on it before they knew/realized/asked about it, to find out it was a direct quote from the movie.
dumbass to put it as your twitter, being in such a high profile.. but being cut like that is pretty ridiculous.
From Dana's comments, it's obvious he was not aware (at the time) it was from that movie.
Miguel Torres was fired for being stupid. Seriously, how dumb is the guy? Forrest Griffen makes a comment on twitter about rape and he catches hell for it and the UFC gets bad press. Rashad Evans makes an even dumber comment about rape at a press conference and he catches hell for it and again the UFC gets bad press. So instead of learning that maybe talking about rape and causing anymore bad press for the UFC is not a good idea, Torres post a stupid joke (yeah I know it’s from a show) about a rape van on twitter and causes even more bad press for the UFC. It doesn’t take a genius to figure out that the UFC was getting tired of the bad press and were looking for a way to deal with it.
This is outrageous. The man is a great fighter. He helps out the local community kids and is a very charitable guy from what I have seen despite not yet having broken into any big money and he gets cut for making one comment (a first offense comment at that)!?

That tweet was in pretty bad taste in my opinion. How old is Torres? That is some immature shit to be tweeting.
