is MMA the new "traditional art"?

martial arts from 100 years ago were the go to systems in their day for self defense/sport. everyone spoke of how great their style was and constantly tried to prove it. now we hear about traditional arts becoming less relevant and sometimes even obsolete. with the evolution of martial arts up to now, MMA has been in the forefront of sport and in some cases self defense. with the blending of styles and people using whatever works, has MMA become the modern traditional art? what will people say about MMA in 100 or even 500 years from now?

I think each camp has its own style they teach as MMA. Then you have guys like gsp and others that train each style then go to training camp to blend them. I am a karate guy but even in kata there are elements of a ground game. As well I would expect the grappling arts of years ago had some striking as well. Its all still fighting saying style X is obsolete would be like saying the laws of sciences is obsolete. We just know more about the body and how to hurt it more. Also hand-to-hand combat was second to weapon play.

there is certainly useful material in the traditional arts that still works. i am a karate guy myself and i still try to show guys i work with how some things from shotokan are still valid. but now we have evolved and i would be hard pressed to agree that, for example a traditional front stance, zenkutso-dachi, would be a good idea in any situation. as it was practiced back then, the principle works but that particular method is a bit aged. even as far as weapons go, a bo, wouldnt do much good against a glock.

i think it is similar in reference to MMA now. the science hasnt changed but the application has. so just like then, when compared to karate from 100 years ago, MMA is becoming just kind of what we do. so how will it evolve from here and be talked about in 3010? will we say "that stuff wouldnt work now" or will there still be gyms that trace their lineage to bj penn (example)?

I'm going to do a post baccalaureate in biotech something or other while I figure out which grad school to do, mostly so that I can work on nano-human weapons. This is no joke. There are companies doing crazy things right now, and I feel I should be helping them.

I do think that mma is our traditional fighting art. I also think it is like an evolution of sorts. I think every student tweaks his art to suit his needs. When he becomes a teacher he passes along his whole knowledge to his student who tweaks it and passes it along. As a teacher I learn form my students while they learn from me. A new point of view can change everything.

Look at Bjj then look at 10th planet , I was told onec that America has done more for the ma world then any one. We look at what works and blend it in to our style making our style more full and well rounded. If the masters of 100 year ago were alive I would bet they would be teaching a MMA of sorts.

Well, just like there are a great deal of ancient/old school martial arts, I think that in the future MMA will be looked at as one of the many fighting styles of our time. It's an effective method of fighting for a lot of scenarios, and that's probably not going to change, but depending on how the world changes it may be looked at as great for it's time period only.

@themadness Beer is good. A nice local amber.

I think we would need to define if weapons were involved. If at some future point MMA guys are trying to defend against weapons, like the TMA were designed to do, it would be fairly messy.
