I have a question regarding the swing of the kicking arm during a thai round kick?  I understand that it helps generate more power and torque, but doesn't this leave your head open????

Good question, I think focusing on tucking your chin, raising your shoulder, body positioning and timing all help to keep your head safe.

You can protect your chin with your other hand, or swing your kicking arm across to protect your chin and throw a REALLY hard kick with more body wieght behind it. And like chaz said timing is way important when throwing a kick, usually best to throw at the end of a punching combo imo so it doesn't get countered like you described (or throw it as a counter if your slick with it).

good advise here. just as in submission, everything has a counter.
