My Results So Far With New Grappling Dummy

Hey guys.  So I've been coming home every night for 2 straight weeks and practicing with the dummy.  It's the Submission Master one with the bent legs.  I wasn't too sure how much I'd improve especially after only seeing mediocre results when I used to use Combat Sports dummy (although it was more for GnP.)  Here's what happened.

I decided to practice just 2 things: Guard passing and triangles.  I limited it to 3 types of guard passes and hitting triangles from different positions.  After a week I noticed, while rolling in class, that I was passing guard like crazy.  At first I thought they were just letting me pass but then after the roll they told me otherwise.  I was defending guard passes more effectively as well because I'd just reverse the scenario in my head and use my knowledge to keep the position.  My triangles improved too.  My teacher even commented that every time he looked over I was either attempting a triangle or I had someone in one, not that I finished them all.. probably 30% of them)

Now I'm in week 2.  I noticed that I'm not gassing out like before because I'm not constantly defending anymore on the bottom.  I now seem to have an offensive plan that keep my partner on the run.  My eyes feel like they're on automatic and I can just see triangle openings and it just happens from there.  My finishing percentage went up and I'm excited to continue growing and honing in on my weaknesses.  Anyone else practice on a grappling dummy?  Any suggestions on how you train with it?

could you post a pic of the dummy you use? I've been pondering getting one for a few years now.

After years of research I decided I didn't want to spend 500+ for a dummy so I bought a cheaper one that ended up being okay for mount and gnp techniques but terrible for anything else.  So I saved and finally spend the $$$ for the one you see above.  It's called a Submission Master Dummy.  I realized that with all the money I spend on training, I could improve much better if I could drill what I did in class at home each night.  Well worth it so far.

How many reps are you putting in for each technique?

I have a home made dummy and have been thinking about buying one.   Mine's a little heavy.   I do like it for repping things out, muscle memory.

As for reps, that's the great thing with the dummy, 10, 50, 100, 500?   Doesn't matter.  Dummy doesn't complain.    For someone who needs to step things out over and over it can help.

I do about 10 each going from slow and methodical to tight and swift by the end.  Then I hold certain positions as tight as possible for minutes at a time.  Imagine someone allowing you to hold them in a tight triangle for 3 minutes straight.  This allows my body to gain strength in all the right places and makes for a great isometric workout.  I just hope my legs don't explode.  My balance when passing guard has really improved as well even though the dummy obviously doesn't defend but the curvature of the body allows it to roll side to side during the exercise.  Well worth the price so far.
