http://bjpenn.com/mmanews/2012/02/09/confirmed-diaz-vs-condit-ii-nixed-nick-diaz-suspended-by-nsac-for-failing-drug-test-13682.html

For the past two days the entire MMA world has been running around in circles trying to get a handle on theNick Diaz vs. Carlos Condit rematch situation.

UFC president Dana White came out and said the deal is done and will be finalized on Friday, only to bedebunked by Cesar Gracie later the same day. However, as time went on Cesar and team withdrew their initial statement and opened the door to the possibility of a rematch.

Late last night, (3 a.m. to be exact) I was tipped off by Cesar Gracie that there was a temporary issue that will keep Nick out of action. Now that the NSAC has released their version of events and I can now publicly divulge the details.

After his loss to Carlos Condit at UFC 143 this past weekend Nick Diaz was required to submit to a post-fight drug screening. This is common practice for the State of Nevada when fighters compete in the evening’s main event.

In the days after the post-fight drug screening it was learned that Nick Diaz was found to have marijuana in his system and will subsequently get his license to fight suspended.

Marijuana is a banned substance in all Athletic jurisdictions. This is not Nicks’ fist infraction for Marijuana use, he failed a post-fight drug screening back in 2007 after he faced and beat Takanori Gomi in Las Vegas.

In this instance it would appear that history has indeed repeated itself and the Stockton native will need to prove rehabilitation to the commission after serving his suspension if he wants to try and regain his license for future events inside the state of Nevada.

While Nick Diaz proclaimed his desire to retire after his decision loss to Carlos Condit last weekend, the possibility of a rematch with the current interim title holder put him back in fight mode. Now, the consequences of his actions are biting him back as he will no longer be able to partake in one of the biggest rematches in UFC history.

If Diaz where to have been victorious over Condit in a rematch he would have been able to settle his grudge with champion Georges St. Pierre in what would have been one of the biggest fights in UFC history.

In the end, Nick Diaz not only loses the chance to prove he is better than Carlos Condit, but he also lost the chance to earn a UFC title, compete against GSP and earn millions of dollars in the process.

The fans also lose as well because after several years of anticipation the Diaz vs. GSP fight is now further away from happening than ever before.

When it is all said and done Diaz likely faces a 12 month suspension, a fine of his fight purse and will have to reapply for his license with the state once his suspension is up.

For a fighter who admittedly uses marijuana and is stubborn, controversial and just down right set in his ways, this may indeed be the straw that breaks the camel’s back and as such I wouldn’t be surprised if his retirement sticks. Either because he does not want to rehabilitate and refuses to cooperate with the re-licensing procedures of Nevada or he just plain doesn’t care to fight anymore.

Either way, in the end more than Diaz, it’s the sport and the fans that are the biggest losers in this recent string of events.

No matter how you saw the fight, Diaz is definitely a loser now.

Didn't they end up giving an Olympian back his gold in a certain winter Olympics because it was ruled that it was not a performance enhancing drug? BTW there are judges, lawers, teachers, police officers that use marijuna. Its use does not make you a loser, but ignorance does......

It's not his use that makes him a loser, nor is it ignorance, as he has been suspended before for testing positive-he knows it's banned.  It is the fact that he has incredible talent and had the chance to be the best at his sport.  He has however, chosen marijuana over his chance to be the best, (and coincidently make LOTS of money).  He seriously loves it so much that he could not discontinue using during his fighting years, for the sake of his career, knowing he could smoke all he wanted after retirement. Is there any one substance, or food that any of us wouldn't be willing to temporarily give up, for the chance to be the best in the world. (and make $ millions)?

There are three types of people you can't argue with 1) Those who want to legalize Marijuana 2) Those who think we never went to the moon 3) Ron Paul supporters.

...and yes Nick Diaz is a loser and an idiot. He had (has) every opportunity in the world to be happy and successful but instead throws it all away time after time again.

So here's my two cents.  Diaz has a doctors prescription for cannabis use.  It is perfectly legal in his state and is viewed as medicinal for his ADHD.  But the athletic commissions don't accept it.  However there are numerous fighters that get away with testosterone injections and other PEDs under the guise of doctor approved trt, and that's perfectly fine with the commissions as long as they know about it.  Its pretty silly both are technically legal under doctors prescription in this case, except one is not accepted while the other one which is just a loophole for using PEDs is fine.  How absurd.

LSBJJ - While I agree with your moon landing statement, could you give one valid reason why pot should remain illegal?

MrBungle, smoking cigarettes leads to lung cancer and a host of other illnesses, plus second hand smoke affects others. Alcohol leads to thousands of deaths per year via drunk driving. Not to mention domestic abuse and medical problems. Why introduce another legal drug? The two that are legal now cause enough problems. Sure the majority of the people use (or would use) these drugs 'responsibly' but way too many do not. It's too difficult to outlaw tobacco and alcohol (we've tried) but it's not to late to add another legal drug into our society that would in my opinion have more negative consequences than positive.

hmmm... mebbe thats why Diaz is a great fighter eh? (yeh i said it)

Let's keep going on why it is a negative consequence.

Pregnant women can have problems with the unborn child.  Gosh if second hand smoke can do it for pregnant people why would cannabis not have those same effects?

Mental health (or lack thereof)

psychosis

schizophrenia

Possible addiction? Not enough data; everything I read says they have only looked into it for the last 20 years are so (addiction)

The usage of pot is fairly well documented; there is no secret here. To even ask the question shows that you don't want to keep yourself informed. Perhaps Diaz (or any other pot smoker) simply wants to go smoke another J rather than read a damned report.

Oh yeh; but there is the conspiracy that all of these are government sponsered studies used to "keep the man down".   Sure; sounds good to me; and asLSBJJ said, we didn't land on the moon etc....

The only fair arguement I have heard in regards to pot is the economic one presented by Bravo ((hemp used to be used as a method to create clothing) it was outlawed because rich folks were raising cotton and wanted to corner the market.

Personally, I have worked with kids in alternative learning environment, and you look a the files; you can find out which ones were introduced to pot in the womb. You can also tell amongst the teens the ones who are unable to function vs those who are. When you get to the crux of the problem 90% of them have used pot at one time or another.

Many of these studies are NOT done by the US, but rather foreign nations where laws are alot more lax on pot.

But hey, this entire thread will end up in a load of people screaming that they "know" something when in fact, they will be the ones who are screwed up 15 years from now due to usage.

LSBJJ - What negative consequences would be come about?  Health wise the only negative side effect of prolonged cannabis use is a chronic cough.  Plus what was the problem with alcohol being illegal?  It gave organized crime a cash cow to fund many of their other illegal activities.  Taking this billion dollar industry off the black market would take money out of the criminals hands.  On top of that it bring in a large amount of tax revenue with little to no negative impact on society.  People already use the drug why not tax it?

MrBungle, according to your argument we should legalize everything to stimulate the economy and collect more tax dollars (heroin, prostitution, fake Rolex watches, etc).

Short-Term Effects
The short-term effects of marijuana include:

Distorted perception (sights, sounds, time, touch)
Problems with memory and learning
Loss of coordination
Trouble with thinking and problem-solving
Increased heart rate, reduced blood pressure

Sometimes marijuana use can also produce anxiety, fear, distrust, or panic.

Effects on the Brain
The active ingredient in marijuana, delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol or THC, acts on cannabinoid receptors on nerve cells and influences the activity of those cells. Some brain areas have many cannabinoid receptors, but other areas of the brain have few or none at all. Many cannabinoid receptors are found in the parts of the brain that influence pleasure, memory, thought, concentration, sensory and time perception, and coordinated movement.

When high doses of marijuana are used, usually when eaten in food rather than smoked, users can experience the following symptoms:

Hallucinations
Delusions
Impaired memory
Disorientation

Effects on the Heart
Within a few minutes after smoking marijuana, the heart begins beating more rapidly and the blood pressure drops. Marijuana can cause the heart beat to increase by 20 to 50 beats per minute, and can increase even more if other drugs are used at the same time.

Because of the lower blood pressure and higher heart rate, researchers found that users' risk for a heart attack is four times higher within the first hour after smoking marijuana, compared to their general risk of heart attack when not smoking.

Effects on the Lungs
Smoking marijuana, even infrequently, can cause burning and stinging of the mouth and throat, and cause heavy coughing. Scientists have found that regular marijuana smokers can experience the same respiratory problems as tobacco smokers do, including:

Daily cough and phlegm production
More frequent acute chest illnesses
Increased risk of lung infections
Obstructed airways

Most marijuana smokers consume a lot less cannabis than cigarette smokers consume tobacco, however the harmful effects of smoking marijuana should not be ignored. Marijuana contains more carcinogenic hydrocarbons than tobacco smoke and because marijuana smokers typically inhale deeper and hold the smoke in their lungs longer than tobacco smokers, their lungs are exposed to those carcinogenic properties longer, when smoking.

What About Cancer?
Although one study found that marijuana smokers were three times more likely to develop cancer of the head or neck than non-smokers, that study could not be confirmed by further analysis.

Because marijuana smoke contains three times the amount of tar found in tobacco smoke and 50 percent more carcinogens, it would seem logical to deduce that there is an increased risk of lung cancer for marijuana smokers. However, researchers have not been able to definitively prove such a link because their studies have not been able to adjust for tobacco smoking and other factors that might also increase the risk.

Studies linking marijuana smoking to lung cancer have also been limited by selection bias and small sample size. For example, the participants in those studies may have been too young to have developed lung cancer yet. Even though researchers have yet to "prove" a link between smoking pot and lung cancer, regular smokers may want to consider the risk.

Other Health Effects
Research indicates that THC impairs the body's immune system from fighting disease, which can cause a wide variety of health problems. One study found that marijuana actually inhibited the disease-preventing actions of key immune cells. Another study found that THC increased the risk of developing bacterial infections and tumors.

Effects of Exposure During Pregnancy
Several studies have found that children born to mothers who used marijuana during pregnancy exhibit some problems with neurological development. According to those studies, prenatal marijuana exposure can cause:

Altered responses to visual stimuli
Increased tremulousness
Problems with sustained attention and memory
Poor problem-solving skills

LSBJJ -  some of those things you listed could easily be legal and not impact things negatively.  I don't believe bungle was implying that anything that makes money should be legal.   Do you think Diaz should be demonized because his doc perscribed him a drug that the commission doesn't agree with while other people have steroid injections for injuries?   Steroids, like pot, are illegal.   What's the difference?  Steroids have side effectslike pot.   I think most wouldagree the side effect of steroids over the long term are worse.

Prostitution.   If two people want to make an arrangement where someone pays for sex I really don't care.   As long as its not children or slaves, something crazy like that.    It could be taxed and it would probably become safer.

Fake Rolex -  a little different Because of copyrights and infringing on another company.

Pot -    If there were laws around it like driving, smoking in public restraints and things of that nature, I wouldn't see a problem with it.

I'll bet if you took 1000 people and let half of themsmoke pot everyday in a room by themselves for 15 years while the other half ate 2 cakes everyday for the same 15 years the cake eaters would be a lot worse off, they'd be much morenofna drain on our society through healthcare issues.

LSBJJ - The short terms that you listed are also caused by alcohol consumption, which I have seen you admit to doing (although I'm sure you are responsible with it, as from what I gather from your character in many other discussions).  It seems hypocritical do demonize one and endorse the other.  As for the long term there are quite a bit of studies that show no link to cancer and pot, however even if that were the case tobacco and alcohol both can cause cancer as well, so why demonize one and not the other?  If pot did cause cancer why would it be used in cancer treatments to help people alleviate pain and increase their appetite?

All of the negative claims you've mentioned are hypothetical, with the execption of those that can also be linked to tobacco and alcohol.  Regardless of these things I personally don't think that the government has a right to tell anyone what they can or can't do so long as it doesn't impede on anyone else's right to do the same.  I did think at one time we were on the same page of small government, but I could be wrong, maybe you have been swayed a bit to the left Wink.  (just busting your chops on that one)

Yes, I do enjoy a good beer (Arrogant Bastard) on the weekends and yes the short term effects are the same as pot. In all fairness I don't have a strong opinion on the legalization of pot one way or another. I just see the negative effects of tobacco and alcohol and don't see any reason to introduce another legal drug into our society. I just don't see the benefits.

You don't see getting taxes from a billion dollar industry, taking non violent drug offenders out of overcrowded prisons, introducing a new legal market to a struggling economy, helping regulate the drug and making it harder for minors to get it, etc as beneficial?

I'm not interested in arguing the de-criminalization or legalization of any substances. If you want my stance, PM me.

Having said that - Marijuana is a schedule 1 drug - the United States federal government has determined it has no medicinal use. Anabolic steroids are a schedule 3 drug - we use them for medicinal reasons that the Feds recognize. At this point, it's important to note, Ketamine (Special K) is also a schedule 3. I don't think too many on the commission would be too pleased if a fighter had ketamine in their system, doctor's note or not. If they're cool with K if it comes with a doctor's note, whatever, they're at least consistent.

And having said that, stop putting things in your body once someone tells you it could cost you your job. It doesn't matter if it's right or wrong. It doesn't matter if it affects his performance. If the commission says "Stop petting cats. Some fighters have allergies and we think it's an issue. If we find cat hair on you it will cost you your license", you don't go to the nearest pet store, you stay the f*** away from cats no matter how stupid it seems.

Ephidrine and its derivatives are legal but testing positive for them will also get you in trouble with the athletic commission.  I'm not defending Diaz for failing to flush his system, I'm just pointing out strange double standards between PED's and pot.

@Drew you just about nailed it, it just blows my mind he couldn't even handle not smoking weed getting ready for the biggest fight of his career that would have brought him the success and recognition he's been saying he wants and deserves for so long. This will probably bring up some things with the athletic commisions and their rules on prescription weed though to possibly reconsider, who knows.

The last time this happened it turned into a debate on legalization of weed, but that misses the point.  Although I do agree that all these fighters with supposed "testosterone" deficiencies is a joke.  Doing roids for all those years will screw up your system, so now they just get a prescription and it's all ok??  Anyway, Diaz knows that weed is a banned substance, yet he still chooses to smoke.  That is just immature and dumb on his part.  Even if weed were legal, the NSAC could still keep it banned.  Bottom line, if you want to play the game, you have to play by the rules set for that sport, no matter what sport it is.  Legality is not the issue, responsibility is, and Diaz blew it (actually he smoked it).

Here's my short and quick on this.. as I am all for legalization.. BUT... BUT!!!... it's not like Diaz DID NOT know that its a banned substance.. as far as passing the uring test.. this wasn't his first trip to the dance.. he's been tested before.. knowing that you got to take a test.. there's plenty of ways to clean your system prior to being tested.. ESPECIALLY when you KNOW that you're gonna get tested.. and its not like either running down to the local supplement shop and getting a detox kit or simply laying off long enough to pass a test you KNOW is coming.. you even know WHEN you're gonna be tested.. THAT is what makes him a loser/idiot.
