Review of Inoue 3 DVD set- The Uchimata,The Judoka, The Samurai

When it comes to Judo DVD’s the Fighting Films Company have done far more than most. Over the years they have produced a large number of polished productions full of information and techniques, from competition to coaching. So when they released their Kosei Inoue 3 DVD box set last year this was a big event. Even Inoue himself came to the UK and toured. So what’s it all about and most importantly is it worth your hard earned cash?
Well the set is nicely priced around £25 pounds per DVD or £60 for all 3 in a nice box (the prices are various depending what country and what supplier you use). Kosei Inoue for those that don’t realise is a 3 time world Judo champion and Olympic champion. He has won so many other tournaments that I haven’t the room to list them. He retired from International Judo after failing to be selected for the Japan Squad in 2008 Olympics. So if you know nothing about Judo that resume should be enough to entice even the most hard core BJJ players to take a look.
The DVD’s follow the usual fighting films format, a mixture of technique, interviews and tournament footage are combined with good quality music and visual images. This is no simple set up with a camcorder this is world class production and it shows every step of the way. So what’s in each DVD?
The Uchimata- Have a guess what is in this dvd? Only kidding, this is the finest DVD on Uchimata ever made, simple as that. Inoue has the best one ever and in the DVD he shows all his variations and competition footage of him doing them for real is followed after every demo. His interviews are interesting and there are some nice bonus features.
The Judoka- This DVD focuses on the gripping that he has used for his career and also his ouchi gari. The footage is great, and its nice to see his gripping tactics. The DVD isn’t as comprehensive as Jimmy Pedro’s and Rhadi Ferguson’ s grip dvds but it is a nice package and interesting watch, full of information by anyone’s standards. It’s just that Pedro’s and Rhadis DVD is simply full to bursting point with information. The Ouchi Gari stuff is amazing and as ever there is a ton of competition footage.
The Samurai- This is possibly the best DVD of the lot in my opinion, but that’s because my favourite throws are featured. It has the following throws and techniques:
HARAI GOSHI
OSOTO GARI
SEOI NAGE
ASHIWAZA
SHIME WAZA
Of course you get all the variations and a ton of competition footage and interviews again.
Overview- All 3 dvds are amazing and when combined you get one brilliant product. On their own they are excellent but a 3 dvd combination is simply outstanding. This could be the greatest set on Judo of all time. Great productions and a great price, it has commentary by Neil Adams (former world champion), and it’s full of competition examples. It is a great set of which all others will be judged against. My view is simple 5 out of 5, and another gold medal winner. It outshines Rhadi Fergusons grip dvd as the greatest dvd of all time simply due to its lower price and higher production values. There is more value for money and although the content and instruction is not as detailed the greatest Judo set of all time award goes to this set. The only problem is how fighting films will follow this up? I’m not sure they can even beat this set but let’s hope they do and keep raising the bar. It’s a Great product and do yourself a favour get it as a box set now!!!!!!

5 STARS OUT OF 5 *****
Gold Medal winner!!!!!
