Rib Injury Issue

Quite a while ago, I was grappling a pretty heavy guy and felt my rib pop immediately followed by a lot of pain which only got worse over the course of 3 days. After that, it stabilized and took about 6 - 7 weeks before it was pretty much gone. But holy hell, it hurt like crazy until it healed.

I got X-rayed and all that good stuff the day after the pop, but there was no break or fracture. I'm still not sure what it was.

My question is what is the likeliness that this will happen again? I've grappled hundreds of times before this with no problems, but I'm worried that it will happen again next time I grapple. When it popped, all I was doing was working to retain guard, so I'm not even sure what caused the pop.

Thanks in advance

Rib injuries sometimes happen in freaky ways. I have a bruised rib now. I got it just turning under someone. Something I've done hundreds of times before.

Start off rolling easy and over time you'll gain confidence in your rib and eventually you'll forget all about it.

I have broken a rib and done cartilage damage. Yeah they hurt like hell! Took me about the same amount of time as you to fully heal. I have been lucky that I have not done either again. I was talking to my instructor and he was saying that the better you get the odds that you will pop a rib or mess up the cartilage will go up. His reason for this is you move faster. Makes sense if you think about it.

Ahhh, my area of expertise. Broke them, cracked them, damaged them in pretty much every way possible.

If they were not broken or cracked and you heard a pop then my guess would be cartilidge. Can be pretty painful. Pretty much all rib injurys take 4-8 weeks because you can never fully rest them, laughing, coughing, sneezing and of course breathing puts stress on them.

Something that has always worked for me is to wait about 2 weeks after all the pain is completely gone. I mean 2 weeks after you can do every kind of stetch and general fitness stuff for 2 weeks.

Will it happen again? possibly. If it's healed you shouldn't be any more prone to having them again. All mine seem to be flukes.

Thanks! And it's good to hear others have gone through the pains of laughing and sneezing etc. I have been genuinely afraid to grapple lately, so I'm very grateful for the insight!

Having had all of them I can definitely say that broken is the absolute worse. I had 2 broken ribs and a sneeze would put me on the floor. Played the better part of my junior year footaball with cracked ribs, that sucked. running, breathing, blocking, reaching to catch the ball, getting takled. ugh.

I got thrown funny in class once, thought I'd just knocked the wind out of myself, finished class in some pain. By the time I got home the adrenaline had worn off and I was in pain. Borken rib and 1 cracked. That weekend I was in bed and my dogs were screwing around, I leaned up to yell at them and heard the most disgusting snap ever. The cracked one broke when I sat up. Sounded like a chicken bone breaking.

You could have torn your intercostals, muscles between the ribs. Can be a very lengthy and painful strain if severe.
