Im just kinda curious how you guys handle this? I've started boxing again and have been put in sparring against females and I can't bring myself to hit back. I work on my slips and defense so it's all good, im just wondering how some of you other guys handle it. I know everyone is there to learn but It's kinda just ingrained in my being never to hit a woman no matter what.

When in doubt the left hook comes out.

The way i see it, the women I train/spar with are a part of the team. As a team member, I will do everything I can to help them train/prepare for upcoming fights. I'm not hitting them out of anger or malice, so the whole never hitting women idea (which i was raised on too) doesn't really cross my mind.

I spar females the same way I spar males that I am way better them.  Use technique, let the get work in and don't try and wreak them.

I pray, do yoga, meditate and still want to smack people

You all assume that these girls are not as good as you are.  That is a dangerous assumption.  I used to spar with a girl who was a world muay thai champion and she got 100% of me all the time.  Spar PEOPLE as you should for a fighter of their ability and size, to draw a distinction between a male or female doesn't do justice to them as a fighter.

Why do people get so unnerved when I smile during sparring?  I wouldn't be doing it if I didn't like it right?!?

I don't see gender once we're on the mat. It took awhile, but even a very attractive girl is just a training partner once class starts. I treat women the same way I treat men of their weight class. Girls who've been training awhile seem to like to be treated the same as guys. I will say that with new girls, it's a bit odd if they don't realize I'm going to hit, throw, pin, and submit them as though they were a new guy (which means after I submit them I'll show them an escape).

Because of my size (6"1 230)I always try to emphasize pure technique when rolling with females.  Same thing when stand-up sparring.  I've been tapped by a 100 lb female brown belt as a result, but isn't using technique the real spirit of jiu-jitsu and martial arts anyways.

Ugh I hate sparring females. I get zero work out of it and brusies because they always go 100%.

Been beaten and scarred, you'll never break me. I'm born again hard.

I never said I assumed I was better. I'm sure there are women out there who could put some hurt on me. Im just uncomfortable hitting a female. To me it's like when a nut shot presents itself. Your body knows it's a target but somthing in your head stops you from hitting it.

When in doubt the left hook comes out.

Well, that sounds like a mental hangup you'll have to work through.

As a smaller guy (I fight at 125) I tend to train with women a lot. This is actually a bonus as I can use that time (as other posters have said) to work on technique. Ignore the gender, and train with them as you would someone who is smaller than you.
