SHINGLES? Don't tell anyone.

A few weeks ago I got a small patch of blisters on one side of my back and a few on my abs.
To be safe I saw my Dr. I was told I had shingles which is a version of chicken pox.
If you have had chicken pox as a child you probably still have some of the virus dormant hidden in your nervous system.
Then one day you may get a relapse of this virus where it travels down the nerve endings to the skin and forms blisters.

Anyway I got a prescription and within a week the blisters where scabbed over and no longer contagious (per the note from my Dr.)
So being the good citizen I told my instructor what had happened and gave him the note from the Dr. saying I was OK now.

That is where I made my mistake.
I am now unable to come back to my BJJ class - forever!!

I understand and appreciate that my instructor wants to protect his students, but I never dreamed I would be banned for having chicken pox.
I asked him if he would ban a child that had chicken pox after the child was no longer contagious and he said he would let the child return...but not me.

So beware of telling your instructors if you have a small problem.
They may not see it as a small problem.

man, that sucks.

he didn't expound on why? i mean i'm not overly well educated on shingles but isn't it gone after the one outbreak? can't you never get it again?

That is ridiculous! That means everyone who has ever had chicken pox should be banned cuz they all have a chance of getting shingles. That includes me! If there's no active outbreak of blisters you should be safe enough to be in contact with other people!!!! And from what I heard when I got chicken pox, kids are contagious from a few days before the blisters show up, so then all kids should be banned too!!!! Cuz you never know when someone has been exposed. I can't believe that stupid rule about shingles.

When we train we sweat a LOT and he thinks that I might get it again (100 to 1 odds against) and I might be sweating and training with someone who has never had chicken pox (not real likely but possible) and then the virus would travel through my rash guard, my gi then through the other persons gi and rash guard and then they might get chicken pox.

I think he is being way too cautious - what about the people who brought in ringworm to class last summer?

Well no point crying about it.
If there any instructors or academy owners out there I would like to know what you would do about this.
According to my research on the internet the occurance of Shingles is on the upswing and if you have older students you may be running into this eventually (that is if they tell you about it).

Hey, wait a minute, why doesn't everyone in the gym who hasn't had chicken pox just get vaccinated? I mean, that's the requirement for getting into public schools nowadays. That way everyone is protected from the virus.

Oh, I forgot, I think the vaccination is for kids only, I'm not sure. It might be a dangerous vaccination for adults. I've heard chicken pox is a lot more serious disease in adults who've never had it before.

No, you're confusing shingles with scurvy. Scurvy is from lack of vit. C

i may be wrong but I think you basically can only get chicken pox once, but you can get shingles multiple times

From what I've heard, shingles occurs in 10-20% of people who have had chicken pox, and mostly in older people. Also, a second attack of shingles is about as likely as a first attack. So, that would mean a person has a 1-4% chance of getting shingles twice in a lifetime, and a .1-.8% chance of getting it three times, etc. This is true for people with normal immune systems; ie, if you're immuno-compromised you're at risk for multiple and extended attacks of shingles. And once you develop immunity to chicken pox, you are at no risk from being in contact with someone who has shingles. Anyway, I don't see any reason to ban someone who has had shingles from a BJJ class, anymore than there would be for banning someone who has had chicken pox.

Make your coach read this

I don't see how you could be banned for life if you had a doctors letter giving you the go ahead to participate.

If I had a cold or flu 2 weeks ago should I not visit my ailing grandmother with a compromised immune system? I'm making this up as I go but you get the point seems pretty stupid.

You CAN get shingles more than once. I got it in college when I was 20 years old; then again when I was 31. The first time, the doctor gave me an injection of epinephrine and it cleared up that week. The second time, I was put on a course of prednisone for 10 days and it went away. Knock on wood. Both times, it was painful; joint aches, low grade fever and I put myself on quarantine before my doctor had to say anything. To this day, no one caught anything from me; no one's kids caught anything from me. If shingles are on the rise, then schools need a contingency plan or lose revenue.

Never Stop Learning; nothing worthwhile comes without discomfort.

Sorry to hear about your training situation. Your instructor is obviousely uneducated about the virus. You might be able to get him to change his mind with some research. My guess is that he is instructing people who have had it before, and doesn't even know it.

I got shingles when I was 32 (so it's not just for older people), I got small blisters in my left eyebrow and hairline. Apparently it is caused by the virus that causes chicken pox (which most people my age have had) and lays dormant in your system. I think stress can cause an outbreak, and from what I've heard, it is unlikely you will get another outbreak (although it is possible).

When I had mine, I thought it was from CS exposure from where my helmet rubbed on my head. It took me about a week before I saw a doctor, who took one look and knew exactly what it was and gave me a perscription for it.

If he doesn't let you back in, hopefully you'll find another training group or classes soon.

In the Army(just happened to me last week)they give a vaccine for it if you've never had it before, if they didn't ask if I had chicken pox before they would have gave it to me.
Personally, I think this is very odd that your instructor has stopped you from coming to class because of this. I remember I got some tpe of wart like formations(forgot the name) on my left bicep from BJJ and the doctor removed it with liquid nitrogen. The instructor knew I got these and he let me come back to train.

Keep training and enjoy what you do.

Sorry, but your instructor is ignorant. He probably still thinks cooties are contagious.

you know, i have been trying to decide exactly how to say this without sounding like a dick, but if any of my guys have any sort of skin infection(or any other health problem) regardless of how it is spread or how you got it or anything, i will be pissed. your situation is unfortunate, and im sorry that you were permanantly banned from your gym, and hopefully you will be able to tell him more about shingles and have him change his mind, however i TOTALLY disagree with the "dont tell your instructor" part. thats completly out of line. your coach should be made aware of health problems that you arise.period.

Bawajie - I respect your opinion and you have a good point to make. I do not think you are a dick because you disagree.
Of course you should tell someone if you are hurt,
but I still say you have to be careful what you tell people.
I think my instructor over reacted and I am paying the price.

You have to remember that no matter how much you like your instructor he is a businessman and you are a customer.
You are only a "friend" as long as he/she sees you as a customer.

If I was ten years old and had chickenpox I doubt I would be forced to quit. I might have to stay out for a few weeks until I was no longer contagious, but I would not be forced to quit.

I really enjoyed training at my academy , I met some really good people and I am going to miss them. For me BJJ was good exercise, good people and a fun sport. Now I have to start all over somewhere else.

My instructor (who I still very much admire) always tells us in class that "it is your body and your responsibilty to protect yourself".
This applies to other aspects in your life.

If I had not said anything about being sick I would still be a student and you know that is true.

And just for the record - I specifically did not mention the academy because I did not want to cause them any problems.
The place I trained was great and I would recommend it to anyone in the area.
I would even go back if they asked me to.

my gym recently had an outbreak of Impatego which is a highly contagious skin infection, whenever it turned up on somebody they would leave the gym only until it was healed as soon as it was healed up they were allowed back, I dont understand why you would be banned?

Yeah the whole thing pretty much sucks for me.

I think it is a business decision to keep other customers and their parents unaware that the BJJ does carry some health risks due to all the close contact. After all it's not like baseball or soccer.
I suspect that I am not the first person to suddenly "disappear" from the class for no explanation.

If this guy was really so concerned about the kids, he ought to have seperate training mats for them, but I guess secrets are cheaper than mats and building space.

Anyway I am going to take a free class at another place tonight.
I have told them my story and they don't have a problem with me joining.
The new place is a much better facility with access to real locker rooms and showers and it is a little more expensive - but that's fine with me.

Thanks for your comments and support.

I'm glad you found a good new place to train. But modern kids should all be vaccinated already, and you catch chicken pox just by going to school. You don't have to actually touch anyone to catch it.

This is from the Center for Desease Control.
I finally found some solid answers to the questions my teacher had concerning this condition.
Some of you may find this of interest.
I also have attached the link so you can verfiy the info.

http://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/vpd-vac/shingles/dis-faqs.htm

How often can a person get shingles?

Most commonly, a person has only one episode of shingles in his/her lifetime. Although rare, a second or even third case of shingles can occur.

Can shingles be spread to others?

............The virus is not spread through sneezing, coughing or casual contact. A person with shingles can spread the disease when the rash is in the blister-phase. Once the rash has developed crusts, the person is no longer contagious. A person is not infectious before blisters appear or with post-herpetic neuralgia (pain after the rash is gone).

What can be done to prevent the spread of shingles?

The risk of spreading shingles is low if the rash is covered. People with shingles should keep the rash covered, not touch or scratch the rash, and wash their hands often to prevent the spread of VZV. Once the rash has developed crusts, the person is no longer contagious...

If we had both know the facts there would not have been a problem.
