side control

Ok guys, so I'm having trouble with control while on top in side control. I can get there often but I always lose it and have trouble controlling the position. I can control easily if I have total proper positioning but I have trouble getting there quick enough before I lose position, which is why I go to north south so often. Any tips, because I really like side control as far as a position to set a lot of shit up.

As your passing immediately establish the far side underhook. Constantly block the hip, look to get your knee under his shoulder and work to cross face him with your shoulder.

First off, nothing wrong with North-South. I actually prefer it to side control and there are a lot of good subs to set up there.

Secondly, I agree with Mr. Bungle. Focus first on controlling the inside hip, then worry about the upper body. Get a cross face or a far side underhook to help keep them flat.

If you know how to hold side control, but are just having trouble settling in and, as you mentioned, you find yourself going to North-South instead, try to just keep walking all the way over the head, through North-South, and into side control on the other side. I do this often and find it very effective. On top of that, there is a bonus Howdy to be had along the way.

Alright, thanks. I am gonna give it a try tomorrow. And there is nothing wrong with north/south, just that I want to have a solid side control as well.

What MrBungle said. My side control improved tremendously when I made it a point to ALWAYS get the far side underhook. Even if I'm on bottom and my opponent has side control on me I always fight for the far side underhook then bump the hips, shrimp, and swim out. The moral of the story is that the far side underhook is your friend. Laughing out loud

There is a great explanation of this in Fujiwara's Submission Master video, I'll try to find a clip of this specific part

Are you getting reverser or are they just pulling guard? Or both?

I'm not really getting reversed, just that they tend to get back to guard. Although at times they are able to get knee to knee.

Oh alright, then yeah Bungle hit it again! Use that arm by his hip to stop him from getting guard, I was having the same problem, but that hook is a lifesaver Laughing out loud You can also try for an inverted heel hook if he starts to get the knee through.

lifting the head up just a little always works for me. not so much that he realizes what your doing. also stay tight arms, knees in. i basically turtle up when i am holdinghim down from side control. and put my elbows together. don't know if i am making sense. lol

hey man, spend some time working on the scarf-hold (kesa gatame)

it's a great hold-down spot, and it sounds like it would be helpful for you: continued transitions to north south, your opponent will have difficulty getting his legs between you (although keep your head low), and it is effective with or without the far-side underhook

kelby - just staying turtled up isnt always the best thing to do. When I'm in side control I actually rarely have both my knees in at the same time. Not sure what you mean by lifting the head a little.

if his head is on your right arm, lift the head up a little with it. or if he is gonna lift his hips, lift the head. it stops him from bumping you off. and turtle up for a few seconds until you get control. your not staying there forever. it is just to control him first and foremost.
the turtling up part while i am holding them down is to prevent them from slipping me into the guard. there first reaction is to put u into guard. but, if you turtle up, put your knee on close to their body, or under the rib area and lift the head. will they can't move. than from there you have few seconds to think of your next move.
makes sense or no.
