Stephen Koepfer is awarded the Master Of Sport from Russia!!
i would like to congratulate Stephen Koepfer for being awarded the Master Of Sport for combat sambo from Russia!
He was awarded this extremely high honor for his fighting and coaching ability, and his contribution to the spread of sambo.
When he was in Russia working on the Travel Chanel show last month he was asked by FKE officials ( FKE is a governing body for military sambo) to fight three people in combat sambo. he did not know why, but he just thought that they wanted to see him fight. he submitted two of them and beat the third by perfect throw. it turned out that two of them were masters of sport, and one of them was a candidate master of sport. afterwords he was awarded the Master of Sport for combat sambo, and from Russia no less.
this is an extremely high honor in the sambo community, and no one i know deserves it more.
congrats Steve!

Great story.

SAMBOSTEVE!!!!! CONGRATS!!!
That's great!
Congrats to you SamboSteve! Well done...... TTT
That is kick ass. Sambo Steve is one of the best instructors I have seen and I've picked up a ton of stuff from HIS videos.
Well done sir!
that's crazy, congrats SamboSteve!
Outstanding, Steve. If im not mistaken, isn't FKE Alexander Barakov's group, or does he just teach there? I know Mr. Barakov played a big part in bringing Sambo to the US.
Big ups to Steve. Nice job!!!!!

Thanks guys (and to Reilly for the post)...
Alex is the head trainer for the FKE, but he is not the President, VP, etc. The board consists of many people. Alex supervises the training for them and trains their trainers. The other officers are also sambists, but are also military/police folks.
OUTSTANDING !!!
Congrats Steve!
Gratz Steve, keep it up!
Gracias!

Thanks!
Thats awesome.
Thanks for sticking this as an announcement :)
Yahoo! Congrats. What does it look like? Is it an official sheep-skin style diploma? And was it the "new" or the "old sambosteve" that received it? Were you sporting a faux hawk when you got it?
Wow, what an honor. Congrats!
But what I really want to know is more details: what set-ups and submissions? and what throw? any videos?
No sheepskin...LOL. Just a passbook. No video unfortunately, I did not really know I was being tested. I simply thought we were sparring that training. I have snippets of video from the trip, but I was there for 10 days, so I don't have very much, and most is training techniques. I actually sparred a bunch of guys one day. Glad I did not know I was being assessed, or else I probably would have been more tense. But, I did nail an armbar, ankle lock, and later on I actually got an arm triangle too. The takedown in which the match was stopped was a scissior. Not sure why they stopped it since I was not standing. But, the way it went down, the guy hit the mat first. But, they were not "official matches" so to speak. It was just a few hours of sparring. It was the old me...no mohawk LOL (I got rid of that real fast after the video BTW).

holy crap, that sounds awesome! Congratulations!
