Suggestions from bjj'ers w/ 2+yrs exp pahlease!!!
So....Recently competed at my first tournament.
And...I lost by decision, errr.
Background:
I've been training MMA informally (no real instruction/no real instructors) since 2008. Recently started at a formal BJJ school near me.
For competition I competed at Adult, Master's Nogi Welterweight division.
I lift weights 4 days a week; practice BJJ/MMA usually 4-5 days a week. Training for the competition I'd roll straight for 40-45 minutes each day with 6 different guys.
Why I lost:
Even though I was faster and stronger, I gassed out (adrenaline dump) and my side-control defense blows.
Need help with...:
1. What goal do I need to have, workout wise, (I'm competing again in NAGA in December) to help insure I don't gas out? For example, do I need to be able to run as fast as I can for 10min straight...
2. Tips on working side control counters, defense etc.
Thank you my knights,
Z
I'd say lotsa H.I.I.T works wonders for me.
People don't realize how much anxiety and nerves zap your endurance. It sound like you have plenty of gas in the tank and are in good shape. Maybe you just need to relax more before and during your matches. That only comes with experience. The more tournaments you do the more relaxed you'll be and the more endurance you'll have.
For example: I can roll with guys (any rank) I am familiar with for hours and not get tired, because I am relaxed and having fun. If I roll with a BJJ black belt who I've never rolled with and don't know very well, I am gassed in 15-20 minutes.

sounds like your in decent shape, i would had some tabata's, interval running and muscle endurance drills to your workout.
have your coach help you with side control escapes, and start under crossbody for a portion of your rolling sessions to force yourself to work on it.
no shame in losing, only in being scared to compete. Learn, Practice, Compete, Grow, Repeat.
