Thinking about joining the army, have some questions.

I know there are some military dudes on this website (At least I think there are), and I have some odd, if not probably common questions.

1. Can you eventually become an Army Combative Instructor? If so, what is the process? If not, why not?

2. I'm Married, my wife is in college. When she gets out, how do we deal with us being near each other if I live on base? Is there a way for her to move with me, or does she have to try and find an apartment around my base?

3. Am I guaranteed to be shipped over seas at some point? Call me a pussy, but I don't really wanna shoot guns at another living person, I'm a Buddhist, and a pussy. lol

A white belt with a lot of questions.

1. to be a combatives instructor you have to complete level one (one week course) and then combatives level two (two weeks) in order to be a company level trainer and referee standard rules competitions. Combatives level 3 is a month long and that allows you to certify level one combatives personnel and referee advanced rules bouts. Level 4 is also a month long and allows you to certify level two personnel and is usually only at Fort Benning except for a few exceptions. Level 4 allow you to run a bridgade or post level facility. Levels 1-2 are fairly easy to get as long as your command supports it.

2. If you are married and your wife is still in school and isn't with you, you would be considered a geographical bachelor. This would allow you to live in the barracks but not collect your housing allowance. Once she finishes, you can apply for on post housing or collect your housing allowance and get a place off post. How much you get depends on the area where you live.

3. If you are in the army, your purpose in life is deploy, engage and destroy the enemies of the United States. So yes you will at some point deploy. Unless you are a Chaplin, you carry a weapon.

So what makes you want to join the Army if you don't want to be deployed??

The Experience, and to serve my country to some extent. Just a bit too cowardly to shoot at something living, in all honesty. Haha.

I could also use the discipline and structure.

A white belt with a lot of questions.

I'm not in the military but have quite a few friends and family in. Anyone in can certainly correct me if I'm misrepresenting.

Just my $.02.
1 - To add to Geno. I think you "can" be anything you want to be in the military, but just like in real life you have to be qualified and willing to do the things you need to do. If you want to be a combatives instructor and you go through the proper channels and complete everything you can do it. Same if you want to be a doctor, lawyer etc. (The big question is WILL you be a combatives instructor.)

2 - I don't think I can add anything on top of Geno.

3 - Not deploy? I wouldn't bank on it. In the mid-late 90's it had really been a while since we were actually in a war with ground troops. Some invasions here and there but it had been since veitnam. I personally know 2 people who went full time in the guard basically thinking that they would never get deployed. 3 years later they are in Afghanistan. 2 years after that they were getting extended deployments.

Based on your few comments at the end there I would say you should think long and hard about joining. Not only will you be relying on the US to not go to war or stay in a war but you have to consider that at anytime some random jack ass can start some shit. (see - Osama Bin Laden may he not rest in peace) If someone does something like that you will be deployed.

You could get a non-combat job, but it would still be crazy to expect not to get deployed in the 2 1/2-3 year minimum timespan your going to be enlisted for.

I'm in the Air froce. I've been in for about 5 1/2 years. I'm currently just getting back from a deployment in Afghanistan. my MOS or AFSC (job) is military working dog handler. I'll say this to you man, if your truely bent on joining the Army, go for it. I salute you and for the tasks your about to do and WILL do. However, I have no regrets about joining the Air Force. I've got to admit, the quality of life is much better. Meaning spending time with your family, where you'll be living at, and basically the day to day things. You'll hear a lot of guys talk down upon the Air Force, but you'll hear just as many -- if not more-- guys say they joined the wrong branch. The Army can be rewarding man if you like deploying for a year and having everyone base your intelligence on what pay grade you are. I wish you the best my friend.!

I know that the ARMY and MARINE CORPS have some things in common. I was a MARINE and every single MARINE is trained as a basic rifleman. Not sure if its the same in the ARMY but Im guessing its pretty close. My point is that even if you join under contract in a non-combat MOS, that doesnt necessarily mean you will not deploy or be asked to use a weapon. In 2003, after invading Iraq, our administrative guy was standing post with me, right in the middle of Al Kut Iraq and he got a combat action ribbon just like the rest of us (which means he got shot at). His job was to take care of our pay, mail and other logistic needs but he ended up side by side with us, standing guard over a General's headquarters, after the seize fire had been called and still took fire. Do not bank on anything NOT HAPPENING in the military.
