Thumb pop - pain - and wrap question
Hello All,
About 10 days ago while training I heard a loud pop from my thumb when on the ground and passing my hand behind my partners head.
I am not 100 % sure but I think it either got caught on my partners shirt collor, or jammed it on the mat.
It started to bruse right away, and I iced it. The bruising went down after a few days but it still hurts a lot. I cannot bend my thumb down all the way to my palm, and it hurts around the base when I squeeze it.
Here are my questions...
Anyone experience this before, any chance there is a break?
So far no x-rays done, but I guess I could its free up here in Canada anyway.
My main concern is the inability to tuch my palm with my thumb now.
See picture, I CANNOT do this, but I could before and can with my other hand.

Last question, would wrapping my hand help or prevent this injury?
I want to keep training, and plan on taping it before next training session.
Any advice?
Thanks,
It may be a fracture, but is most likely a sprain or tear. When you say you can't put your thumb to your palm, is that due to pain and swelling, or the thumb won't move in that direction when you try to move it? If it is the latter then go to an MD as soon as possible, it means something is torn. If you can't move due to pain, then you could try the RICE method and see how it goes. When id doubt go see an doctor!
If you tape it because it hurts, then that's good. Taping to prevent this injury will limit your grip ability. Next time try tucking your thumb in when passing it under your partners head.
I've done this numerous time when rolling and i always dislocate the same thumb. Last time it happend to me was when i shot for a takedown and drove for a single leg but my thumb got caught and pop! Id get it checked out if it is the first time you've done it. Now im used to it
Where's it hurt on the thumb? Common injury for a forced thumb pull is a ulnar collateral ligament sprain, aka gamekeeper's thumb.

Not saying that's what you have, but if I were a betting man (and don't think I haven't thought about setting up a betting pool based on y'alls injuries) I would consider it.
After grappling hard for a few months me and a few of the other guys noticed something like this.
Our Thumbs where ALWAYS hurting!?!
Right at that joint.

Heh, I had the exact same thing happen a few years ago. Is your whole hand bruised too? My thumb has never been the same since, but not I'd say it's 99% back to normal, and it happened like 3 years ago. It won't feel good for a couple months, and even after that, it'll be noticable, but won't be a hinderance. But you should probably check it out. All I got was a bottle of vicodin.

I have the same thing even now if i put too much pressure on my thumb it feels like its being pulled again. I just tape my thumb/hand before rolling now to try and give it a bit more support

Major pain circled in red, and minor pain circled in green. The joint circled in green is where my lack of movement seems to be, but I think it is just swelling. Hopefully after a few weeks it goes away.
I would go to the doc, but I have a new injury that needs dealing with.
This morning a plow backed up into my parked car in front of my house...
When it rains.... it snows (in Canada anyway) man I can't wait for winter to end.
I have had pain in a similar areas. I went to the doctor and found out that I had dislocated my thumb. Not sure how but it went back in on its own.
Seriously, f$*@ these adbots.
^^^ Haaha! I kept meaning to call or send a card....lol. The best part of the thread is when you talked about your more significant injury: your plowed car. Too bad there wasn't a lawyer-bot on hand.

I would say go get an x ray. It may not show anything because it probably tendon/ligament damage.
I had the exact same thing happen to me over a year ago. I never got it checked out and now I am off to see a hand surgeon next week
