WICHITA, Kan. - Former heavyweight boxing champion Tommy Morrison is in a Kansas jail on drug charges, the Sedgwick County Sheriff's Office said Friday.
Morrison, 42, made an initial court appearance Thursday on two charges - possession of marijuana after a previous conviction, a felony, and possession of drug paraphernalia, a misdemeanor. His bail is set at $50,000.
The former Jay, Okla., resident was charged April 27, court records show.
Morrison was extradited to Kansas from Tennessee this week, officials said. Morrison's previous conviction stems from a 2005 South Dakota drug arrest.
Morrison's preliminary hearing is set for Sept. 29, and details of the charges will remain confidential until then, officials said.
A financial affidavit from Morrison states that he is married and lives inPigeon Forge, Tenn., and that he has no savings or property, the Wichita Eagle reported.
On a court document, on the line asking for his occupation, he wrote "athelete," the newspaper reported.
Morrison started his boxing career in "toughman" contests in Jay and fought his way to the top in 1993 by defeating George Foreman for the World Boxing Organization heavyweight title.
He went on to star in "Rocky V" and made several television appearances.
In 1996, it was reported that Morrison had HIV, the virus that causes AIDS.
He has been convicted numerous times of alcohol, assault, drug and weapons crimes and spent 14 months in an Arkansas prison, reports indicate.
the many faces of meth poster?
Years of untreated HIV and drug abuse appears to be pretty bad for you
Didnt he reapply and acquire a boxing license some years back? If Im not mistaken he won a comeback bout.
Man...he truly is a shell of his former self. He went from a diesel HW boxing champ to John Hackleman on meth.
All I know about this is the story above and it mentions marijuana. where does the meth come into play?
@Halfraq -
Thank you....I was wondering the same. If meth makes a 42 year old boxer with HIV look like a 42 year old boxer with HIV, I don't see the down side.
I've seen meth users, and either he just started the day of the photo, or he doesn't use.
P.S. - I don't know anything about his past drug history, so there's a 99.9% chance I'm wrong.
Someone told me just the other day that Morrison was fighting again.
C'mon Tommy Gun! It's crazy how life can go from bad to good and good to bad so easily
Never said he was on meth or using it...just meant that he looks like he does due to dramatic weight loss. Something is causing the weight loss if not HIV b/c the last article I read on him a few years back was about how his blood test was wrong and he was clean and fighting again.
You are a moron, drugs didn't do this. He is HIV POSSITIVE. That god awful disease caused him to change. Before you post something stupid like methamphetamine, think. Now go back to the drivethru, traffic is backing up.

FREESTYLE AMERICAN SHOOT TEAM Thanks to eagles for the sig!

Methamphetamine is a terrible drug.
