There has been a ton in the news about unemployment lately. I've heard several say that we shouldn't extend unemployement benefits to people because "it encourages people to not work." These people say that the majority of people on unemployement don't want to work, they want to wait until their benefits run out until they get a job. Then I've heard over and over again how employeers can't find people because their applicants actuall say "can you hire me in 3 months when my unemployement runs out."

Another suggestion that I heard was that these people should 'move to where the jobs are'.

I posted a position on Craigslist. (in this economy I don't want to spend my budget on career builder.) In 4 business days I have recieved 126 resumes. Almost all of them have degrees and are overqualified for my entry level $12 an hour job. But they are BEGGING me to get something. Even though they are still drawing unemployement. Moving is not an option for many of these people because their spouses have jobs, so you can't really move to find a job when you would be taking the 1 job you do have

I know there are some lazy bastards out there that milk the system. But the idea of millions of people sitting around with no job 'living it up' is ridiculous to me. When i was out of work 2 years ago I spent hours on line looking and a good amount of time depressed because I had a daughter on the way. It was a low period in my life, maybe the lowest I've personally had. Which makes me extremely thankful that I was only out for 2 months and I've been in a position where my family had plenty of savings, so 2 months didn't hurt us.

I'm glad things worked out for you the way they did, especially with a funny little girl on the horizon.

Economists study the trade-off between taking state aid and working for low pay, and the government and state governments set their unemployment based on that. So they already know that it's no enough to keep people from working. The rate of unemployment for the 18-30 age group is over 30%. That's really bad. The amount of long term unemployed is now almost 60%, which is a level we've never come close to in the past.

Letting the Bush tax cuts for the wealthiest citizens lapse will help a little bit, thankfully.
