what annoys you most when rolling

i absolutely cant stand when someone moves for the sake of moving. there is no purpose for what they are doing. i was rolling with a guy the other day that had me mounted. he started shifting his hips from side to side and bringing his knees up. he wasnt baiting or setting anything up........just shifting. he didnt even have wrist control, just postured on solar plexus. i was said "what the hell are you doing?" his response........ i dont know. reversed and passed to side control....arm triangle. the end.

if you cant beat them, arrange to have them beaten.

lol - some people jsut think they got to be active.

What annoys me MOST? People with bad hygeine. Stinky's.

After that I hate it when people don't move, just sit in a turtle or whatever for 5 minutes. Even if you end up in a bad spot and get subbed, who cares? I have a training partner who will just sit and defend all turtled up somehow. argh!

I agree with that. I hate guys who just spaz out in with random movements like that. I especially hate it when it's jerky. Usually that's earns someone a ticket to me taking side control with some crossfaces when they try to shrimp in, to knee ride, to knee on face. I'll just ride around on top of them for a while and eventually finish with some kind of choke. I'm kind of a jerk, but I only do that to guys who are cocky or have been around for a while and still haven't learned to be smooth.

I'm gonna go with Bruce and LSBJJ. But in addition to those that smell bad I really hate the people who don't cut their nails.

Here are my general peevs about training in general, not just rolling.

Hygeine and hair are a given for everyone I think LOL! What I really hate are:

The "its only fun when Im winning" guys- You know those guys who are balls out and all over you as long as they are winning but once you get them in a dominant position they gas...or pretend to gas and basically just quit. I was doing shark tank drills (grappling only). I had fresh guys switching in on me every few minutes and we save our noobs for last. One of our noob MW's comes in and I start in guard. Hes all over me, Im tired, but as soon as I swept him he basically quit and it was his first round but my 5th or 6th. CANT STAND THOSE GUYS!!!

Straight up WANNABES- Guys who want all your attention and knowledge but when you need to get ready for a fight they dont want anything to do with you. Noobs who stick around know that at some point we will need some extra bodies just to jump in and lay on us or throw punches at us when we are tired but we have some guys who lack the heart to even do that. They want to be "fighters" yet they dont want to spar or do anything that requires getting ready for a real fight. They watch TUF yet they fail to realize that the sparring stuff that is on TV actually happens in a fight gym...imagine that.

LOL sorry for the rant.

Agreed with Bungle, stinkiness and untrimmed nails is the worst!

I also dont like the people that want to dish it out, but wont take it back. I used to train with one guy who loved to hit, and hit hard in sparring, but if you threw anything back, he'd start complaining. So annoying!

Tat - We got a purple belt at my gym that every time I sweep him or catch him in a submission he gets "injured" and doesn't wanna roll anymore. The funny thing is every time I roll with him I get kneed or elbowed in the face and he doesn't seem to have any problem with that.

And just to add to the wannabe I really hate when a guy comes in and after a week he starts talking about how hard he trains and how this is his life, when he's actually had about 3 hours of mat time. But usually those guys end up quitting after a month so it works out for me.

Another pet peeve of mine is guys who leave their gis bundled up in the car and come in and try and roll smelling like cat piss, and then get all uppity when we tell them they can't train until they clean their gi.

I don't like when people bigger than me just use their strength, you won't be able to do that shit when you don't have 50 pounds on a guy. I know when I roll with people smaller than me (which is not very often, usually girls or kids) I practically use no strength at all and just work technique and leverage, and I never try to finish smaller people either, because it's just too easy, so I just get a sub and let them work out of it, it works better for everyone.
It's not really when rolling, but I hate it when I am drilling a technique, especially if it's something I just learned, and the guy I am working with is just strong arming and defending the shit out of it. I understand giving some resistance, but the whole point is to practice technique, not to defend it. You obviously know what I am doing so it is easy to defend, so there is no point to what your doing except to be a dick. It is especially annoying because I am a 135er and most the time people are bigger and stronger than me so it is easy for them to just use their strength. Jackasses.

I get frustrated with guys who won’t relax when throwing. Doesn't matter uki or tori...they get all tight an jerky and then somebody takes a crazy fall.

To me, Judo is like a ballet, except there's no music, no choreography, and the dancers knock each other down.

I have to go with BLR also with bad hygeine... But my everyday experience I cant really compliain. The guys I train with are more than helpful and patient with me. It could be tap, restart, tap, restart for the whole practice but they take the time and break it down for me; y Im out of position, y I got caught, how to defend better. They show me the little things that matter and its helped me improve alot. Instead getting tapped 10x in 5 mins its down to 2x on a good day. I love training and rolling at C3.. Oh one thing just came to mind that really annoys me about training thats "freak injuries". Its part of the game but it sucks. U do a move 1000x and think nothing of it then one day u going through the motion and oouch ur rib looks like its about to poke out ur skin, twist ur knee, or tear a ligament. As far as people, I havent had any bad experiences at C3 so far..

I agree with:

- Bad Hygiene
- Peeps who fart up on ya
- Peeps who wear loose T-shirts that are now soaked and that now wet t-shirt gets up into your mouth, eyes, and nose somehow
- Guys who lock you up and don't move at all ... plus ... press their mouth on your neck area. This sucks ... rofl ...

1--The percentage inflate(r)!!! GGRRRR!! I hate that guy!!!!!! You all know him! He says "What like...50, 60% or so? Nothing crazy?" You say: "Yeah, we're just rolling. No trophies or money right..ha ha ha.." As SOON as you start he goes absolutely insane! Trying to lock out joins with maximum effort, NEECCCK CRANKING like he's out collecting human skull specimens, accidental elbows, nose-exploding cross facing.....life or death, baby! If that motherf%@@#@ can grapple like that at 50% he is the TOUGHEST dude on Earth. It's weird, too, because for all that skill he usually doesn't do terribly well.

2--stinky f%$#*s. I mean...there were guys in Milwaukee who wouldn't even wear deodorant. Oh well, I just straight up told them "You reek, I'm not rolling with you."

Stalling, Hygiene

Everything else i dont mind. My gym is large with a few ammy fighters and lots of active grapplers who compete and it gets pretty rough/competitive and we have a lot of newbies drop out.

What i dont like is the four month newbie who tries to tell you how to roll or your too rough. Its a rough sport genius.

I used to hate cross facing but have come to accept that its part of the game. I give it as much as i get it. Get used to it.

I hate when im in the Gi and white or blue belts do submissions that would be illegal under most rules sets like Kneebar, certian ankle locks heel hooks. Which would get them disqualified.

Im sure most of us have done one or more of these annoying things to other people.

I am a big guy and I try not to just out strength people, but I always find it funny if you are doing light sparring and I am barely hitting the person yet smaller guys feel like they have to hit me as hard as they can because I am big. No avoiding that I guess.

Why does it annoy you when someone starts on their butt? Its more realistic for you to start in a guard passing scenario than wrestling on your knees. I really hate watching guys wrestling on their knees for three minutes and not get any realistic training in. Someone just needs to pull guard.

I know that guy, the one who refuses to tap even while demonstrating technique.

Had this guy come in to train with us after his MC-DOJO shut down. I was demonstrating some basic stuff for a few intermediate noobs, the armbar from guard being one of them, and I actually had to put the guy's arm under my armpit to get the tap. He had that- "this doesnt work on me" attitude that is realatively common among MC-DOJO ninjas. My teammates, understanding that I was being nice, grew impatient. What he didnt understand was that I was being nice with all of the holds.

Anyway after all of the demonstrations were finished, I almost took his arm home with me during live rolling...he has yet to return (my plan worked). Needless to say, the armpit trap was not required to get the tap from the armbar.

"You reek, I'm not rolling with you."

funniest thing I have read all month! - thanks for the laugh Smile

my dislikes:

- new people who try to muscle the crap out of you

- people who get into a ready dominate position to do a armbar or kimura, or anything that works on the small joints in the elbow then crank into it fast and hard...my elbow never freaking heals!

Poopsauce: why would it annoy you if people do leg locks? They are usually legal in competitions as long as your in an adult division above beginner. And even if they were illegal in some tournies, what's the difference?

Bulleteater: AGREED! I cant stand those guys!

Tat: LOL! I have dealt with one of them before. I think he told me one of the escapes I taught would never work. So I went straight to a positional type of drill (which I was going to do anyway) where you stay in one position and try in maintain control and the bottom person has to escape, if he escapes you just reset and go back. Needless to say, when he was on top, everyone hit that escape on him a million times.

I also cant stand the guys who come in and have had maybe 1 or 2 classes and try to tell you what your doing wrong. I even had one guy who had 0 experience in any type of submission wrestling, but decided to take time after class to show me his "tricks." His tricks were just a few basic chokes that he couldnt even do right.........

Only happened once, but a dad brought his son to BJJ class, and proceded to challenge BJJ as a legit combat sport, "guard is stupid" "he could actually fight and none of these guys could do anything to him" etc. I offered him top postion and he started. I went open guard, he put his hands on my neck and leaned forward... Guess what happened next?

@ Eagles- My instructor is from Brazil and usually when we do in house tourneys (Gi) we follow IBJJF rule set. NO-Gi usually anyting goes...no complaints (leg locks all day from the turtle is my go to No-GI).

But in the Gi we have guys doing leglocks and calf/ bicep slicers who arent in advance ranks (purple and above). Which are illegal techniques and could result in disqual. It ERKS me that they dont know the difference not the actual technique itself.

In my opinion I think its bad to practice moves in the Gi that you cant even use at lower ranks. No-Gi its all good.

People disagree with me on this all the time but in my Gym most of the guys dont do both Gi and No-gi. Its two different groups but i do both and have two games for both.

^^^ Correct sir! He didn't tap, so much as muffle a mild scream. He was embarassed after, but I can only imagine the drive home with his son after. But on the bright side, everyone in class got to see the speed and effectiveness of a good armbar and they all worked on it during free rolling. lol
