What to do with a guy who only has 1 speed....150mph
I have a guy who started with me last March. He was a high level wrestler in HS so he has a very good base. I constantly have to tell him to slow down, when we are doing drills he's full speed 1st time and every time. In football my coaches used to call this 'half speed hero'. I mean this in the most positive way = he's just one of those crazy southern rednecks that is strong and goes full speed always. :)
He did a NAGA event in Orlando back in the summer and took gold in his div. This past weekend he did the Naga event here in Nashville, was doing great and ended up with the silver because he got DQ'd for slamming his opponent in the finals. He's got 1/2 year under him and he's hanging in there with black belts, specifically when he's on top!
Anyone have any good luck slowing someone down? Getting him to understand that sometimes 50% or 75% is a great training tool. (there is also the fact that some of the other guys who just aren't as athletic don't want to get creamed by him)
Sometimes it just takes time...
We had a state champ level wrestler that started with our camp that was the same way, probably a year ago. It was always bull rushing, side control, caveman submission (something akin to a head squeeze). The first two or three months he would run roughshod on the rest of the white belts, then once we started getting better technique and learning how to play into and counter his strength he started to catch on that he should be learning, not smashing his training partners.
I think the best story is when he went up against a purple belt during a freeroll. He had like 40lbs on the purple belt, and he was still super agressive. During a five minute round, the purple belt tapped him like 10 times. The look on the wrestlers face was priceless. He asked, 'How do you keep DOING that?" and the purple belt said 'I learn.'
go super slow in a free roll session. while he is blistering around, move around and give him the impression you couldnt care less if he was there or not. maybe even yawn a time or two. when he gases, take you spot and sub him as slow as you can. then say "see, i told ya so..."
dead serious. it worked with a former state champ we had.
Throw a gi on him!
^^^ LOL, good point!
There's no way to convince a guy like this to change except to prove it, which it sounds like you are doing. It sounds like he has the type of identity where he would take a loss as a deep, personal failure, even if its in practice.
Once he gets tapped enough times by the guys using an opposing strategy, he'll adapt or quit altogether. Either way, you aren't rolling with a steam engine.
I would probly tell him we are only as good as the room of guys/girls we train with. The devil is in the details. The faster we go the more details we miss.
get your fish hooks (grapevine, leg ride) on him. I noticed as I got older I had to compensate by slowing them down, namely their pace. Also tie ups, whizzers, etc. Control them, break them down...
suck out all the air out of someone, then let them get a half breath, then suck all the air out them again. Make them struggle with their breathing.
Give him a punching/grappling dummy to train full speed on. Then tell him when he's training with you guys to slow down, this might help because it will get all the extra steam he has for training

have him smoke a joint before class.....
I kid I kid. =P
