What's the rule on Leg locks at your gym?
Just wondering what the rules are for all of your gyms regarding leg locks. We allow all leg locks from day one with the exception of the heel hook. Heel hooks are ok for the 'advanced' grapplers and pros, even then they are more catch and release.
I train with a guy who has many many leg lock victories in MMA. You'd better learn quick! He's very good about stopping and telling the newbies they should tap.
No leg locks on or by beginners, we generally don't even show or allow too many submissions, once they get a basic concept of defense, escapes, sweeps, etc they learn basic subs . After a student displays a certain amount of knowledge and control all leg locks are allowed. Heel Hooks are allowed between advanced guys as long as prior to them rolling they agree to it.
I allow all leglocks but do not allow students to make each other tap out. They are allowed to secure the position, even heel hooks, but are not allowed to apply force. But they have to first have been in class when leglocks were taught. Someone on their first day in class is not allowed to do leglocks and the other students cannot do them on the new student until they have been taught.
all leg locks allowed, with a "your partners safety is your responsablity and you will be held responsable" clause
heel hooks are catch and secure only, no crank.
Leg locks are typically allowed from day one at my gym, but it is stressed to be careful. Normally you're told to tap instantly if you get caught.... I've also seen a couple of the instructors make new people work on something else while they teach them to the advanced students.
Pretty much everything is fair game, heel hooks are catch and release with the better grapplers.
ya i dont like people twisting my ankles who dont have self control and proper know how in what their doing.all though i dont mind a good leg lock battle.my go to guy on them right now is Brian dr sick yamasaki and aric paulson.
What Chaz said is pretty much how our gym is ran in regard to leglocks.
Leglocks are fine in submission grappling, even taught extensively, but heelhooks are take, leave, restart...
i have 3 coaches: 1. straight ankle lock and kneebar, 2. just straight ankle 3. nothing at all because a french guy just destroyed an ankle a few weeks ago.

All leg locks are fair game during no Gi day, but during Gi no heel hooks for certain people. A case by case basis, not really by belt rank on that one.
A white belt with a lot of questions.
