So I teach at a BJJ Club at the local university 2 times a week and tonight one of "those guys" came in. He didn't train just sat by and watched. Then at the end of class started asking questions. He asked if I did MMA and I said yes. He then asked if I fight and I told him right now I'm focused on training and cornering guys and getting my gym up and running. He asked what my stand up style was and I told him Muay Thai. Now he's the kicker, he told me he does too, in fact he got his Black Belt in Muay Thai in Thailand a few years ago. I kinda just smiled and nodded trying to be polite and not laugh in his face. Next he proceeded to tell me that he was 56-0 in amateur MMA and that his last fight fell through because the guy found out about said record. Once again I just smiled and nodded and told him he could come train with us on Wednesday even though I really wanted to ask who he got his Muay Thai black belt from and why he's still fighting amateur after winning 56 straight fights. I'm sure I'll never see him again as this isn't the first one of "those guys" I've come across. In fact I generally deal with them once or twice a month. It just baffles me that these guys think that this kind of thing impresses people who train on a daily basis and have generally been around the martial arts scene for a while. How many of these guys do y'all run across?

If he was really that good he'd have to register his hands as deadly weapons with the local police. You know, like I did! Big smile

all the time! Here's my 2 favorites: I had one guy who came in and first asked if his 7 year old son could fight and train full contact, we politely replied no. Then he asked about trianing for himself and we told him he could come in and try a class, blah blah blah. THEN he starts telling us about all the schools he's been to. Told us the last oen he was at he got thrown out of because he kicked too hard, LOL!!! (and the school, btw, was a very respectable one) So he leaves, 2 months later we get a call from him while he's out at sea, rather than calling his family, he calls us and tells us that he's coming back and that he was going to be in the UFC soon because he wrote DW a letter, LOL!

Another guy came into our school who told us he had a bjj black belt, a muay thai black belt, and about 5 other random styles he has black belts in. This was years ago, I hadn't even been grappling that long, he was older than me, twice my size, way stronger than me. I had him on his back and tapping out with in a minute, lol....... Then he asked us if he could run classes at our school 4 times a week if he gave us mats... we obviously replied no. Funny thing is he asked us later if we were sure we didnt want "X" amount of mats and it was a different number of mats then what he told us before...

We also have one guy that comes in once a year every year to challenge my coach to a match, he throws him around a little bit and he leaves all disappointed, LOL!

Because they feel inferior and think that it is a bad thing to start out as a begginer. (which is the only way to start)

your answer is this....................

Delusional disorder is a psychiatric diagnosis denoting a psychotic mental disorder that is characterized by holding one or more non-bizarre delusions in the absence of any other significant psychopathology.

i dealt with a 15 year old kid several years ago that truly had mental issues. he was the son of one of the adults that was also a beginner. i was trying to teach him basic grappling positions and in the midst of it he began flailing about and grunting. of course, i was a little weirder out, so i pushed back and stood up. this kid looked me directly in the eye and said........"i used to train tae kwan do so i was holding back to keep from hurting you." he then put his hands together like he was praying, did a deep bow, and walked away. he was dead serious. i stood there in bumfuddled silence.

if you cant beat them, arrange to have them beaten.

can my 7 year old son train and fight full contact? genious. I got my black belt in muay tai years ago. I don't see how you guys are running classes without one:) My test for my blackbelt consisted of wrapping my hands in hemp rope and honey then dipping them in broken glass and then fighting jeanclaude van damme. I won. Obviously.

That guy was obviously an idiot and a liar, but there are good schools who give belts to their Muay Thai students as sort of an "in house" ranking system. They should probably tell their students there are no belts, though.

I get tired of people doing the same thing with their military background. Every person I meet that was in the Army was a Ranger and every person I meet that was a Marine was Force Recon.

When I think of it, I think they were all black belts in Muay Thai.

People just need to be happy with what they have accomplished or they need to accompblish more.

I had one guy come in and tell me "I train with iron bars" - I still don't know what that is meant to mean, needless to say he didn't last long

I've noticed that MMA tends to attract a ton of weird people and low lifes in addition to all the cool people involved in it. I've heard so many awesome comments and seen a ton of goofy guys trying to look bad ass, but only one really stands out like that.

One time my instructor went out of town and left my friend Ruben with the key, so we opened the gym early and got some afternoon training in. Out of nowhere this muscular meat head looking guy comes in asking about prices. We were like 17 at the time, and we had no idea what to tell him, so we gave him our coach's number and a copy of the school schedule, and told him our coach offer a lot more info than we could. But he wouldn't leave. He started telling us about how he was an awesome wrestler, but he never won states because he wanted to get big instead of cutting weight. We just went along with it, and all of a sudden he goes, "I had the fastest high crotch in Miami! I ain't tryna pull ya dick!" I had to try really hard to keep a straight, and I was like, "Uh... I appreciate that, man. Please don't do that. I believe you."

Even after that, he still wouldn't leave and he started telling us that he already had a little MMA experience. He said he had fought an unsacntioned match in a club on South Beach one time, and it was on Youtube... naturally I asked to see it. So we go look it up on the computer, and sure enough it was there. The twist in the story is that his opponent was dressed head to toe in a Spiderman costume -mask and all- and the old spiderman theme song was playing in the background. He did indeed have a fast double leg though and beat Spiderman by TKO (quite an accomplishment if you ask me).

We told him how awesome he was and asked if he wanted to roll, and suddenly his old back injury flared up and he left. Never saw him again.

I'm not a black belt, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night.

I love weeding those guys out with our workouts. Most of them will usually leave or make excuses if you ask them to roll but inviting them to join in on a workout seems to be less intimidating b/c they know that they wont have to show any actual MA skill. Most of them hear "workout" and they automatically think traditional lifting is on the menu and thats when we break out the sprawls, burpees, box jumps etc. Just have a bucket handy. Crazy

Ahhh, the madness won't stop. Just met another dude who told me he was in a Marine Recon unit in Iraq. It just happen to be the same time I was there, so I listened to his story. I knew he was full of it because we were actually operating out of the same area, but then he made such a dumbass comment that even I was caught off guard. He said he was in Afghanistan in 1998 doing prep work for the invasion and that is how he got wounded. I am sitting there thinking. If we didn't get attacked until 2001, how would we know to prep the battle field 3 years in advance? The only logical answer is that 9-11 was a government conspiracy (joking of course)!

I worked with a guy at a gym who had on his Gym bio he was an MMA fighter. I was thinking cool, I have someone to talk to about marital arts. When I first talked to him he started talking about how his Ninja Master put him in underground cage fights to test himself and he won 9 fights in a row. Now this guy was in shape and strong so maybe, just maybe he was some kind of underground Ninja fighter. To his credit he came over to my gym and sparred two 5 minutes rounds with me. Murdered him on stand up and tapped him 7 times on the ground (I am a three strip white belt in BJJ). Afterwords he looked all demoralized, so I gave him some KOTC videos I had as a gift. Told him hey you have more balls then most for just sparring, watch the fights, find another teacher and you would get better. Never saw him again, but maybe he will start training with someone who is not a Ninja Master.

We usually dont advertise our gym b/c we were getting the right type of members through word or mouth. Sometimes we would go months or years between retards entering our gym and giving us their Kimbo Slice resume. Now that we are advertising and expanding our gym, I am dreading the influx of ninja warriors that are sure to come. Stare

On the otherhand, it should be entertaining.

Tat - Its always entertaining when the kings of the bbq and ninjas come in. I wish I could get the clientele to keep my gym going without advertising!

The main reason for expanding and advertising is just to pay the bills, have money for equipment, and add quality members. We arent trying to explode into Xtreme Couture or anyting but our main goal is to just have a place to trian and to get our local youth interested in the sport to further preserve it in our area.

But as this thread has pointed out, IF YOU ADVERTISE IT, THEY WILL COME!!! Let the entertainment begin...bring on the posers LOL!

OMG These guys kill me, I use to find it funny but it got old real fast! I really never have these guys actually train and if they do they are known as our 3 month wonders and thats giving them to much credit lol. We have a group of great guys and gals who love to train and they weed these people out by not accepting them into the group. Some guys who are like this have changed their tone and got with the program of training but most dont last they go back to their day dream. But like I said a lot of them dont ever step foot on our mats they just want to come in and lie, everyone who hears it know's they are full of shit lmao.

Check out this vid it is perfect for these kinds of guys. I hope the link works
