Berimbolo
![]() |
The "Berimbolo" is a Gi sweep from the de la Riva guard used to take the back on an opponent.
Apparently the Berimbolo is Portuguese slang for the African musical instrument "Berimbau" which is used extensively in capoeira.
Regardless of the name, the technique is very creative.
I have included two videos, the first is of Rafael Mendes showing the technique in Portuguese, and the second is is for us english listeners from ZombieBJJ.

Here is Mendes getting it in competition. If he were a lockflow member he could push the 'hit' button. I however, can not.
To be hitting the Berimbolo in high level competitions over and over takes a crazy amount of practice.
