Here, Travis shows the Hip out escape from side control

  • Step 1
  • Steve is caught in the bottom side mount and Travis has the cross face position
  • Step 2
  • To make space, Steve steps his legs out and slightly turns away from Travis as he pushes against Travis’ neck to get rid of the cross face.
  • Step 3
  • He now pulls his hips completely away from Travis, pushes away with his arms and turns back in to face him.
  • Step 4
  • With plenty of space, Steve pulls himself back into the guard.

what the hell is that

It is not necessary to give everything all the time.
Instead we must realise the critical moments and give it all then.

Worthless is what it is!!!

no love for the hip out!

Is he over exaggerating the movement for demonstration purposes?

He exaggerated the movement. This isn't really an escape in itself but it should help facilitate your escape.

Yup, tried this dumb shit in training and got laughed at

i think this could be a good escape/guard replacement technique. however, it is lack some of the small details. so i've learned and use a variation of that technique that might help you guys out.

so in step 1 of the pic, if you are on the bottom using the gi. you want to place your left hand into his collar with your thumb in and the four other fingers on the outside of the collar, probably level to the top of neck. you do not want to grab it too high or too low or you use lose leverage. then position your forearm under his neck. if they try to block you from positioning with their head or chin, use your whole body and buck them up and quickly position your forearm underneath their neck. i would keep my right arm close to my body, probably with my elbow along my ribcage. so i can help defend my left arm if they try to attack it, or be ready to put my hand on their hip to prevent them from moving to north-south.

so step 2 of the pic, this is where i do something different. instead of throwing my legs out like that. i scoot my legs close to my butt, i want to try to touch my heel to my butt and be on the balls of my foot. this will give me a lot of power when i try to buck him off. so imagine if my head represented north and my left arm represented east, you want to buck him northeast of you. so at a 45 degree angle. so you want to buck him and push them away and down towards the floor. what? push their face towards the floor? yup, sounds mean. kinda is, but very effective. if you don't push down, they can lean back into you and you just wasted a bunch of energy for nothing. if you push their face towards the floor it's hard for them to lean into you and it gives them less time to react as well.

so onto step 3, while you are pushing them away, so at the same time. you want to be turning towards you right side just like in the pic in step 3. you should have some space where you can shove your near knee (right leg) in. and with you left leg trap their right leg, so the left leg would be over their right leg like it would be if you were in half guard and trapping their right leg with just your left leg. you want to do this to prevent them from just standing and passing your guard again. it is sometimes difficult to do this, so to buy some time i would use my right hand and push against their left leg or hip and get my left leg hook in.

step 4, when you are doing step 3 you are on your right hip/side of your butt cheek the whole time. so once you have everything in, you want to scoot your butt back to center, while sliding your right knee across to get a butterfly hook in and you can work to get a full guard from there or work something else.

i hope the details were clear and helpful.
